Smell after Jeep sits in sun

On warm days (like it's been lately), my Jeep has a pretty noticeable smell that smells a bit like nail polish remover. It's not really strong, but strong enough to notice. I thought maybe it's just something with the new car smells, but my Jeep is 4 months old now. Is this normal? Or should I take it in to get looked at? I've had no other problems.

If its a soft top, its probably just the vinyl.

Typical of new vehicles. It will dissipate in time.
Leaving your widows down will help!

It's a hard top. It's a new smell to me and I think my wife and I haven't gone longer than 3 years each between new vehicles. Hopefully it will just go away. My Harken Hoister came today in the mail so I should be able to get the top off and air it out completely.

No need to worry, that's just the 'new Jeep smell'.

Yeah I notice I get the new car smell in my Jeep when it's warm out and it sits for a bit. Kinda nice actually since I feel like I bought a new vehicle without spending the money again.

Mine was the same way, especially when I first got it at the end of last summer. I live on the Florida/Alabama line so it was around 100 degrees. Took about 3 or 4 months to go away.

Every now and then I get a whiff of that Permatex smell. Wondering if they used it inside somewhere to seal something up.

Enjoy it.

Someone, who shall not be named, left a sippy cup with milk in the back of mine. Be satisfied you didn't get that smell.

I'm not sure what ccoston is describing is the new car smell. My JKU has the typical new car smell, however my wife's JK has a strange fresh paint/nail polish remover smell that we can't identify. Nail polish remover is a great way to describe it because its not just a smell but it also has a fume feeling to it as it goes into the nose. It's only noticeable when the vehicle has sat with the doors and windows closed for several hours (whether in the sun or garage).

So ccoston, I think I know what you're describing, and I don't have an answer for you.

Mine used to smell like bitch, till I broke up with my gf, and got a new one. Now it smells like love. Funny how the whole olfactory thing works...

It is the off gassing of the glues and plastic. It might take a while to fully dissipate. It is often a bit stronger in Jeeps due to the higher than average greenhouse, particularly if you have the softtop up or inside, or have vinal seats.

Ethyl Benzene, formaldehyde, and plasticizers....mostly VOCs, and not good for you.

We were out on the trail last weekend and I reached in the Jeep to get my winch controller (had to pull myself out of some ruts) and a guy standing there watching goes "Hey, man - smells new!". With a big grin, I replied: "It is - 4,000 miles on it!"

Plastic smell in 2013 JK

I'm a new member and recently bought an amazing 2013 JK Sahara. Was talking to a friend about the strong new car plastic smell especially on a hot day just getting in the car. He sent me an email that was forwarded to him about some very low level toxic gas like benzene that generates from enclosed hot plastics used in interiors. I live in south Florida so that's always the issue.
The advise was to roll the windows Down and drive a minute to air out then close up with AC on. It's a pain but who knows what the long term effect is, so I do it.

You might want to leave the windows cracked a bit while parked. That'll allow the heat and smell to escape some.

It'll bake out after a month or so. Try to keep the windows cracked when possible though, or it will start to fog the inside of the windshield with crap.

Good idea! I don't have a garage and its rainy season but just a crack should work, thanks

Normal 'new car' smell is usually the upholstery... the nail polish smell must be the plastics heating up as I only smell it when it's in the sun. I seriously doubt it's good for you. I'm sure it's killing us slowly like the rest of the poison all around us.
