Smoke from under the hood

Hi All,

this morning I freaked out as smoke was coming out from under the hood when I was stopped in traffic. I checked my temperature gauge but it seemed ok.

One thing I did different from other days is I washed my 2010 JK yesterday night, I park in the garage and it was 9 degrees this morning.

any thoughts on this ? should I contact the dealer ?

Thanks !

9 degrees??? Wow, that suks!
"Smoke" from under the hood was likely water vapor from where you washed it yesterday night. Keep a check on it, just in case.

Not to worry. I see "smoke", it is actually water vapor rising from the grill area after I wash my JK. It is residual water near the radiator left from the rinse cycle. Enjoy the ride.

Happened to me also. After washing, went out grill was smoking. People were stopping me to let me know. It seemed to be water that pooled under the hood and as the engine heated up it just steamed away. Haven't had the problem since. As long as you have no puddles under the next day.

Thanks guys! Geez the engine must get extremely hot to vaporize water residue... Im glad to hear that it was only that and not an overheat issue.

It really doesn't take much to vaporize water.

I get this almost every morning in temps below 60 degrees at the same spot (red light) in my morning commute. Just a little smoke breathing out of the front and center of the grill. It only lasts/smokes for about 20 seconds which is why i'm not overly concerned. But what i don't understand is that my jeep is garaged, no residual water should be in the area and for it to happen. What i should do is jump out at that light where it always happens and see where the smoke is coming from. I just assumed that by the time i got to that light, the engined warmed up to a certain temp that burned off this 'water source' that i have no clue where it comes from. Or maybe my Jeep just wants her morning cigarette

That's condensation. Not the same thing as water flashing to steam...

I noticed it happened to my JK today. It's an '09 but I bought it pre-owned 2-3 weeks ago. It's been raining on and off today, and is a little cooler than it was yesterday (65 degrees) but by no means winter-like temps. I went home for lunch (2-3 mile drive) and by the time I got home, out of the Jeep to the front of the car I saw mist like smoke coming out of the grill. Didn't really smell like anything was burning or anything like that. The hood wasn't hot. I opened it and no smoke coming from under the hood. After about 20 secs or so it stopped. It did not happen again on my ride back to work nor my ride home after I got out for the day. (I kept an eye on my temp and it was fine. Should I be concerned? I've waited a very long time to buy my first Wrangler. I hope this isn't something potentially major. 

That makes me feel better. I also called the service department where I purchased the Wrangler, he said the same thing. He also said that he gets calls regarding the issue somewhat often.

Whew! 

Also got the steam after every evening wash this past winter. Washed it yesterday in 90 degree heat and nothing when I drove it around the block.

...so you _DO_ realize the ultimate nature of "electricity" is "smoke"....yes?

As in, when you let all the smoke out of an electronic gizmo, it most often ceases to function....

and the more smoke/electricity in something, the bigger the wires to carry it....the more smoke you let out, the worse the problem....

even a thin wisp of smoke can signify there's no more electricity....

although STEAM is a different matter....

good luck

Mine steams like a teapot boiling over the day after a wash...surprising the first time it happens. Once you find out it's nothing it's fun to see how others riding act when it happens

I've been noticing the same thing for the last couple of months on my 08. Every time it happened to me I would look for a spot to pull over and pop the hood to see where it was coming from. As soon as i got pulled over it was gone. This was driving me nuts!!! Finally over the weekend It happened while I was at the quarter car wash. I finally got the chance to bury my nose in the smoke. No smell of antifreeze at all. I still couldn't see exactly were it was coming from. I'm sure its just water vapor burning off. So glad to here this is just one of those Jeep things!

The aggregate measurement of this kinetic energy transfer is defined as thermal energy and occurs only when there is differential in the temperature of the water molecules. Liquid water that becomes water vapor takes a parcel of heat with it, in a process called evaporative cooling. The amount of water vapor in the air determines how fast each molecule will return back to the surface. When a net evaporation occurs, the body of water will undergo a net cooling directly related to the loss of water. … Water vapor is a by-product of respiration in plants and animals.

Is the CAT missing?

I wash mine ALL the time and I have NEVER seen smoke. EVER! I just got back from 1,000 miles in Upper Maine along Canada border hunting and collected a lot of dirt and salt. I power washed my JK including the engine bay and no smoke.....tiny bit of steam......but zero smoke..................on the JK that is. One needs to relax after a 10 hr drive at my age

My 07 did it also. Drove me nuts for a bit trying to figure it out. But as other people have stated, its pretty common on the JKs. Waiting to see if my 09 does it.

Noticed it this a.m. while sitting at a stop light, we had a dusting of snow so I just figured it was road spray vaporizing.

Must be an Old Video don't know where in MA or most of New England you would find that much snow this year.
