Snorkel Mod Questions

Hey guys. Forgive me if this is a stupid question or may have been covered. I am brand new to the world of wrangler (just got a new unlimited) and am just trying to get my feet wet, literally. Does anyone know if there is a snorkel kit that could possibly be installed WITHOUT making any cuts in the hood/side of the jeep? I've got my wife talked into most everything else I wanna do, but I think any body cutting mite be a hard sell.... Thanks for any help or nudges in the right direction.

All the ones I know of (AEV, Rugged Ridge...may not be out yet, and one whose name I can't recall) require cutting.

Now that I think about, there's no other way to get to the airbox BUT to cut, unless you snuck something in through the grille and over the radiator. But then people would call your Jeep things like "Mr. Elephant" and "The Anteater."

I'm gonna go out on a limb here and say...no.

I may be wrong but I seem to recall reading that just putting a snorkel on is not a license to go submarining. You still have to waterproof various other electrical components. Just making sure you're aware.

Someone will drop by and correct me if I'm wrong.

"anteater" mite not be so bad... Was thinking maybe some one had one that ran under or around the wheel well... Oh well prolly the last thing I'll do anyway so maybe then it will be beat up enough that a hole in the hood won't seem so bad... Maybe the new car effect will have worn off by then.

Take it out on the trails. Don't kill it but get some respectable wear and tear on it. And – most important – take your wife WITH you as much as possible. And let her drive.

One night you'll be sitting down to dinner and she'll drop this on you, as only women can do: "Think we need a snorkel?"

Bam!

If you take your GF/wife with you, the clearance is whenever she starts screaming.

This is a bit dated, but very informative. There are more recent threads...

Air Snorkels - The Good, the Bad, and the UGLY

Bolting on a snorkel with an AEV hood, as I think you know, will not save you from deep water. Looks cool, though.

As for the Wrangler's stock water clearance...someone will know. Personally, I'd think it was travelling speed that was more important. You hit 6" of standing water @ 30 mph you could hydrolok your engine.

Seems like common sense and a little knowledge about the water you're about to go through would be more useful than the maintenance hassles that come with installing a full-time snorkel system.

Not trying to dissuade you of your snorkel ambitions...just brain food.

I have a jetski for when I feel like hitting the water, so it's not something I'm worrying about.

Even if you don't end up with a snorkel the AEV hood looks great

Yeah... It's seeming to get higher with each outing... Usually ending with "well, that was stupid!"
