Cool So I wanted a Sport....

I went into Huntington Beach Jeep initially on a Commando Green Sport S that was optioned out with the Freedom edition, but after looking it over I really hated the "leather" parts on the seats (My legs aren't a fan of how hot it can get when left in the sun, and SoCal isn't exactly getting any colder...), and the grey/green/black color combo just didn't do it for me in person like it did in the pictures. I was a bit heartbroken, but I had to pass. The sales guy (Mike Sorenson) wanders around a little on the lot and asks me, "Hey, do you like the blue color?" I answered that I was on the fence between commando green and true blue, but there weren't any Sport JK's on the lot in blue. He comes back with "Hey, why not take a look at a Sahara?".

My initial reaction was...Pshaaaaw! I'm not a soccer mom or made of money dude, what are you trying to sell me here?"...But hey, I'm on the lot surrounded by Jeeps, may as well have a look-see just to put my mind at ease that I did my due diligence before walking off the lot and into another dealers icy grip and beginning this painful process all over again...

We walk past the obvious Sahara's, with their full on body color tops and fenders (I really REALLY don't like the look at all) and I'm casually looking at the window stickers while my jaw drops increasingly to the pavement...$34k, 36k, 37k...And it's not getting better...Where is this guy taking me???

We finally arrive at a True Blue Sahara that's got the standard black hard-top. I hate to say it, as much as I generally detest these b@st@rd children of the JK world, I was kinda liking what I saw. The blue/black combo of the Sport is nice, but something just never sat quite right with it to me. I can't explain what it is but it just looks odd with black fenders in certain light. This one however, with matching fenders and black top was beautiful...Just stunning. As I was about to open the door to see what was inside the sticker shock hit me. $32,835.

Jaw to floor again, and I'm ready to walk. I flat out told this guy before we even got started I couldn't spend more than 30k out the door. I'm not dumping my own money into this deal just to be on the right side of my own equation. If he thinks he's going to up-sell me on this he's sorely mistaken. I immediately question the guy and he tells me to just have a look and let him know if it's everything I want and we can deal with pricing later. My head and wallet are practically screaming at me to run away as fast as I could, but my gut tells me to stick it out and at least humor the guy before I laugh in his face at his brazen attempt to swoon me with this over priced Mall-Crawler. Sooooo into the fray I go...

And of course it's got everything I really wanted in the first place (Automatic, 430n with HDD, Cloth seats, 3.21 gearing with LSD rear, Deep tint windows, cruise, Black hard top, and the connectivity group and it's blue), but it's still a way overpriced rig and I can do without half of the things it's got in addition to all the stuff it had that I wanted in the first place. I'm poking around the interior knowing full well that I can't afford this and I bring up the price on the window...

He says to me that this one in particular has been on the lot for a while, since most people that come in to this dealership get a 4 door Wrangler with leather and all the toys, this one is too "stripped down" for his average upscale client and too high-brow for his everyday Jeep buyer. Long story short, he's had a lot of lookers, but no takers. I mentally prepare myself for the number that's going to shoot this turkey right in the head and add myself to his list of everyday Jeeper's and he hit's me with $28,900 with my Chrysler affiliates program discount and the discount his dealership is already throwing on top of it just to move this unit off the lot.

Jaw to floor again. By my calculations, that's better than 6% under invoice.

With $2500 down (my planned investment from the start), my financed amount out the door was $29,868 with California tax, tag, title and dealer fee's.

So needless to say, I'm now the proud owner of one of those over-priced Mall crawlers, and I couldn't frakkin' be happier!

See ya out there!

Addendum...As much as I LOOOOOVE my rig, the first thing on the To-Do list is to peel off the Sahara quarter panel stickers (I'll be replacing them with something a little more me), and take the chrome trim inserts off the bumpers. Eventually new bumpers will replace the stock ones, but I wasn't a fan of chrome accent bits before, and I'm still not one now. I've got no idea what I'm going to do with those at the moment, but the extra chrome's gotta go.

Congrats! Sounds like you got a pretty great deal.

I'm in the same boat with liking the matching fenders but not so much the top. If I bought my Jeep again, the one thing I'd change would be adding the matching fenders even though the paint would probably be a little screwed up by now The wheels on the 13 Saharas are also pretty awesome.

thanks for the read. I initially went to HB, CA jeep and they made a mistake of just giving me guesstimate for my trade in and not going any further than that. went to champion jeep in Downey, CA the same day and got my jk 4dr around 24k after they gave me a real estimate.

Peeling off the Sahara stickers... shameful. Glad you found "the right one" though.

Welcome to club Sahara!

One thing to remember about Sahara's (and Rubi's) regarding the sticker price....the mark-up between invioce and MSRP are a lot higher on Sahara's and Rubi's than on Sport's. For instance, invoice on a Sport may be 97% of MSRP, where as invoice on a Sahara/Rubi may be 94% of MSRP. Once you start comparing invoice to invoice, the sticker shock isn't quite as bad.

I pulled the stock Sahara stickers righrt away....but put on bigger, better Sahara stickers! Oh, and yes...dump the bumper accents.

The leather seats and what I can only describe as mis-matched color choices killed it for me. CG is a great color on a Jeep. Just not on the one I wanted. I'm overly happy with the Blue, especially when the sun light hits it just right.

I spent the last week or so exchanging emails with the internet sales manager before I ever considered setting foot into their dealership.

I'd recommend anyone doing as much business through email as they can before ever making a trip out to a dealers lot. Get a price, quote, incentives, whatever, all in writing. Print off the email string and bring it with you. Makes any salesman's job either that much easier or that much harder depending on what kind of person they are.

Other than a minor snag with the fact that I had somewhat committed myself to the Sport one and they had to re-do the paperwork for the Sahara, and my trade-in was registered in Georgia, it was a smooth and relatively painless procedure (as far as car buying can be).

I'll be replacing them with something less yellow. IMO, it looks gaudy with the blue/black of the rest of the Jeep.

LOL, I was thinking the same thing!!!! for the first time since I have been born a jeep wrangler has finally been offered in an OD Green! Lot's of green over the years but not the color I wanted. I drove a Detonator Yellow for the last few years, but I too am now an owner of a sahara, but in Commando Green baby! I wanted the saddle interior and premium soft top with dark tint! Sport was out of the question, and the rubicon was out of my budget! So it was Sahara or nothing! I liked the color matched fenders (reminds me of jeeps from my youth) but stuck to the spirit of the wrangler with a soft top and 6 speed manual! nothing "soccer mom" about this sahara!!! LOL

Congrats to the OP on a fine vehicle!!!!

What's the point of hijacking this thread with a question like that..
Start a new thread or conduct a search.

"Bayouwolf" congratulations on the jeep. Cool color choice indeed.

I walked up saw the Commando Green and said it time for a new Wrangler. I asked for the Sport S in Commando Green, they didn't have one on the lot. (sport S on the lot $34K) They found me a striped down one with no power doorlocks or windows, regular AM/FM CD player, and AC. I wanted all the technology to be under the hood. It has HDC, ESC disconnect and the 3.6L Pentastar. I wanted 3.73 gearing but I'm on the Hwy 90% of the time since I live in the OC; so the 3.21 didn't bug too much. The best part is I added the new Mopar Maximum Care Warranty. It's for life and covers everything except for break pads and body damage; 5000+ parts. And LoJack with early alert. Final price $33K

Replace them with a different color then Gotta show some sahara pride! Don't forget you got that good deal just because this was a sahara.

You are an excellent writer. Enjoyed your story / experience.

My story:

Searched for 8 months on color/style/options... had no clue what i wanted, just knew i'd be happy with something modified, ready for my hunting lease, and that redefined the cool factor, oh and since i live in Texas, it had to be black. Obviously, that's the smartest color to buy when it's 110 degrees outside. Actually I stretched that a bit, I really love black and it matches my black Harley. Something about me, but my ride has gotta match my other ride, if ya know what I mean.

Called a dealer to test drive a black kevlar JKU. Guy was a jerk on the phone - just a lot of negative statements about other Jeep dealers, excessive arrogance, etc. My "assclown" meter was off the charts with this dude. i never went.

Searching web and came across what is now "Mines." Drove to the dealership (this place does not sell stock Jeeps, only modified - lifts, big tires, towing pkgs, bumpers, lights, fenders, w/e upgrades you want)

Took one look and had two thoughts:
1. "Daddy's gotta have that" which was followed by my second thought 2. "Daddy better get used to sleeping on the couch too"

(no one knew i was looking - i just talked alot about 'wanting' a Jeep)

Salesman came out,

I said, "can i drive this one"
He said, "sure"
...25 mins later...
He said, "how was it"
I said, "I'll take it"

Again, thank you for your story, excellent!

CONGRATS!
