So this happened today after a tire balance. Left rear wheel came off at 45mph, crossed 5 lanes of traffic. So far shop is replacing wheel, fender and rotor. Lost some steel at bottom of shock mount, not sure about that yet. I hope picture loads.
Wow! I've seen it happen several times. Heck, I had it happen to me after getting the JKU back from a body shop. This is why I always go behind the shop with a torque wrench.
I personally know a couple people this has happened to. In both case it was easily preventable. This is simply unacceptable. I am glad that you are Okay.

I never take my vehicle to the shop is I can avoid it. So far I've taught myself all about brakes, body mounts, suspension, body panels, replacing a muffler, dropping a fuel tank, pulling a motor out and completely rebuilding it, you know,, the basics to stay out of the shop. It's amazing what you can learn with just basic wrench skills and the will to do it. I don't even have a lift or a garage, backyard mechanic all the way
My buddy had a Jeep dealer put on aftermarket wheels and tires. The mechanic forgot to remove the PIN and his back wheel came off. That's some scary shit
If the shock hit the ground make them replace it. You never know if it has structural damage and will break at a later date.
I was lucky..I was in the right lane. It was my wheel that passed me and crossed all lanes of traffic. It got scary when it hit the median and started bouncing towards oncoming traffic.
