Just get on the 10 south to 86 south to Ocotillo Wells State Vehicle Recreation Area. Probably all of a 45 min. drive; you'll find about 40,000 acres of desert to play with.

That's a good choice because just up the road is Arroyo Salado which is small but it has some good trails and washes.

South of there is Plaster City off of I-80.

If you want trees and some mud this time of year head up to the Big Bear Ranger District. Beautiful scenery and some technical trails but they are not all open all of the time. Tread Lightly!

For wider expanses for overland type trails go to Red Mountain near Barstow. This is a good time to go. It is big and hot up there in the summer.

TDS is right around the corner and is in your area. Should be trail runs from mild to wild:
Tierra Del Sol - Four Wheel Drive Club of San Diego | TDS – Home of the Desert Safari

Great place to meet and greet.

You are in a decent place to launch from for Death Valley, Mojave Preserve, for the expedition runs. For rock crawling Big Bear and Calico would be good and there is a little place outside of Vegas to wheel, name escapes me at this moment but if you check the NV section it will be listed in there.
