Yea, it's definitely pre 2013. Just curious about that change for the '11 and if there was somewhere you could look to see distinguish years

There was a factory change to the OEM soft top in 2009 or so. Those older versions use different door surrounds, don't have the cable system, and tuck into the doors differently.

In 2011, the windows got bigger, but the design didn't change.

In 2013 spring assist was added to the 4 door tops and the premium top material was introduced.

-----------------

Important note if you are buying a take-off OEM top.
If it is still new, it should come with the soft top rolled up (the window bar in inside of the roll), two boxes (one has windows, one has surrounds and velcro straps), and most importantly, two mounting brackets (and 4 screws) that attach to the roll bar. Those brackets come from the factory already mounted to the roll bar on vehicles that ordered dual tops. You MUST make sure you get those from the previous owner....or you will be spending a nice chunk of change on those brackets.

The cable system began with the 2010 MY. Prior to 09, sunrider was still an option.

Can someone explain the difference between sun rider and other (are not all tops sun rider?), and what the cable system is?

Thanks....I could not remember if it was 2009 or 2010.

If you are buying anything that is a new take-off, you don't have to worry about it. All OEM soft tops made over that last few years are Sunrider. It was the early JK soft tops that had different mechanics to them.

Just bought a brand new 2013 Premium Soft Top from another forum member yesterday.

I was going to wait to install it but it looks so damn nice I think I'm going to try this weekend. My garage is in the 50°F range, will I regret trying to install in that temperature?

After reading installs in this thread (thanks, SB!) I think if I soft latch into the header it should make it a lot easier.

You're welcome!

Some people have said they've installed in colder, but the general consensus from what I've read is that you REALLY need it to be 70 or higher to allow the top to stretch so you can make it fit. They also say that they let the top sit out in the sun for 1-multiple hours to make it easier to work with.

I guess it all depends on how disappointed you'll be if you don't get it installed all the way and how much of an issue it is for you to get the hard top off and back on again if need be.

Maybe I'll lay it in front of the fireplace first, wrap it up in a nice warm blanky, give it some hot cocoa...

Yeah, I thought about it not working and having to put back on my "old" soft top.

Mmmmm.... chocolate!

Maybe if you find one section that won't stretch you could try a hair dryer? I'd be TERRIFIED of using a heat gun on the soft top. Those things are almost as hot as the jeep heater!

While it can be done in the cold, it will be much easier on a warm (hot), sunny day.

Huge install tip for when you are ready to button it all up.

1. Hook, but don't latch the front section.
2. Go to the rear and hook up the rear sail panels.
3. And these are probably the most important tips: When you go to latch the front make sure the clamshells are FULLY OPEN, that will give you another inch or so.
4. When you are still trying to get the front the latch, do this:
Get into the passenger seat, slide it forward so that you scrunched up. and adjust the angle of the seat back to 90 degrees. Yes...you will be cramped up....but the reason for doing this is so that you can supply the much needed leverage to push the soft top forward that final 1/4th of an inch so you can get it to latch. Once the soft top stretches, you won't need to do this. But the first couple of times are a real beast.

Thanks, all.

panthermark, would you add clicking in the two bows rails (above the doors) before doing #1 on your list, or is that just a given?

Yeah, that would be done before you finally start to latch the top shut.

I don't know about the 2 door, but trying the get the 4 door premium top latched shut the first couple of times SUCKED.

Thank you. I actually ordered a new OEM top so I'm curious to see what will arrive.

What is the "cable system"?

It is just part of the current Sunrider feature.

Some early JK's didn't have Sunrider and the door surrounds were different as well. .

Interesting. I suppose that I will be ok, since it was the complete kit with hardware.

Anyone have experience with this top? This is the first I've seen and I'm very interested. I want something modular where you can remove front or back. Wondering how easy these are to remove, store and install on the fly.

I live in Socal where we literally have no rain in the summer. So I'm just looking for a bikini type top that will just cover the leather seats from the sun when parked or too hot for passengers. I also want to be able to protect from night dew after sun goes down (so spyder shade won't work). Any other suggestions? Something quick to remove.

So I figured out it is a 2012 OEM top, all hardware but the screws that attach the brackets to the roll bar. These ones.....MOPAR 6503259 - MOPAR® M6 x 1.25" Round Head Screw for 07-14 Jeep® Wrangler & Wrangler Unlimited JK - Quadratec
Can you use a different type of screw so I don't have to pay 6 bucks a piece for something that is hidden away under the bar padding anyways? I would assume you could use a different screw, I guess my question is more has anybody used a different one/can point me in the correct direction?

With the challenges encountered installing the soft top, I'm starting to wonder if it's worth it. Is it just the initial install? I was only wanting to put it on so I can drop it back on a whim. Am I kidding myself into thinking it'll be easy during the summer?

I'm a little confused. I have found someone selling a soft top still in the box. The date on the packaging says duel top, with a date of 8-23-2011. My question is, has the duel top always came with the premium fabric? And would this top have the sun rider option?
Thanks

The soft top is always nice to be able to throw up or down at any point. I never installed one but I do use mine. It's great when you on a whim go topless and then decide, uh not a good day for this. It easily shoots up. Never had a hard top but I like my soft top

To use. Just unzip side rear panels and pull off. Unhook rear corners and throw on top. Unlatch the header bar and take the top out of the chanels in the door surrounds. Fold it back neatly and comfortably. Less than 3 mins tops.

Thanks! Those worked. I only got through the first thread, since it took me forever! 419 posts! Either way I think I got all the info I need.

To summarize for other people interested in this thread.
ORH (Offroad Heros) is a one man (Tim) shop and you get what you would expect (no email responses, delayed call backs, long 2-3 month lead times, bad instructions, missing parts, incorrectly made parts, etc.). With that said, he does right his wrongs well and makes a good quality product since it is all hand made by the pro!

As for Quality of the Top, everyone is very happy with the look, function, feel and quality of materials. If you get a lot of heavy rain in your area it will probably leak from the center crossbar (between the two top panels) and from the seatbelt pass through on the cargo top, but most people don't have a problem. Some also say it is noisier than the OEM soft tops, but this it likely subjective and there are some fixes members found and shared.

For me personally, I don't think I want to wait that long and deal with the customer service issues for a top that expensive. I may call and see if he would sell me just the top panels and if they can be used alone.

Any other ideas?

I bought a fabric "cab cover" that goes over the roll cage, top up or down. Basically a tonneau cover like we used with old Brit sports cars, to keep the rain and squirrels out with the top off. $50 at Quadratec: Rampage Products 1264 - Rampage Products 4 Layer Cab Cover.

Saves wear and tear on the top mechanism; also protects top from sun fading. Cheap protection. Should work with bikini tops etc. although it will be a bit loose. They also have versions that work with the doors off.

Fear not; once you are past initial assembly and/ or install it's not a big deal. Well worth it for the fresh air; I had forgotten how much fun a roadster is. And your dog will thank you.

Practical advantage: put the top down for a fast run on the freeway to blow out dog hair.

Just don't wait until it's raining/ snowing hard to put the top up; it's not a quick flip-up deal. Wind also doesn't help. Especially with the JKU; big ragtop compared to a 2-seat sports car.

Premium fabric didn't start until the 2013's rolled out in mid-late 2012. Find out what year Jeep it came off of. I want to say that Jeep bundled the Premium top with all dual top packages for the 2013's.

Yes, that top would have Sunrider.
