Soft Top Install

Hey guys I need some help installing a mopar soft top on my 2009 wrangler unlimited.

We have everything together and now we are at the point of installing the fabric to the frame. The instructions are saying to "drill hole in fabric" notch and lineup with the lower header. There are 27 screws, do they really go through the fabric? are these screws visible on the top of the jeep ? are they exposed to weather? and will they leak? i just want to make sure i do this part right, because drilling into the fabric seems kinda weird and there is no turning back if i mess it up... i just feel like these sheetmetal screws are somehow underthe fabric... but the instructions arent very clear.

Thanks!!

Jeff

Getting ready to do this tomorrow... Yes they really go through the fabric, no they don't show, as they get turned under the header, and there is another piece mounted over it. So no worries with leaks or visibilty of the screws....

I'll see if I can get a pic of an installed header for you.... Not to great with the 'puter camera....

Two different tops, but you might get the idea, the fabric gets screwed to the one part then the second part goes over the top to sandwich it in there.... Hope this helps...

Thanks for the info and the picture!!!

So basically I am putting the wrong piece on the top? There are two pieces, one piece that appears to sit inside the passenger compartment, I believe it is referred to as the "lower header" in the instructions. This piece has what appear to be screw holes to receive the screws that hold the fabric onto the header. The other piece has holes that appear to lineup with the holes on the lower header, which is what is causing me confusion.

I think I am just over thinking this. Will have to look at it on Wednesday. We ran out of daylight this afternoon after about 5 hours of slow, tedious bow assembly... I may just bring this to a dealer and have them finish it... but would really like to get it done myself since I've made it this far already... plus they will charge me a fortune...

I can't help you yet, but if our bows come in tomorrow, I'll have more info for you by then, may even do a pictorial to go with.... It's been a nightmare getting the right parts for this one... But hopefully by Tuesday at the latest we'll get them in. We've never installed one from scratch, but we do have the advantage of having the old one and the one on my TJ for reference, so I don't anticipate too much confusion. If it weren't for having the other tops, I'd be totally lost by the instructions, and posted as much last week. Mopar didn't really help themselves when they wrote the instructions on these things.... I'll make a point to get pics and do some sort of write up about the install since there have been many ?'s about it in the past...

Thanks!!

It's kind of a shame that they can't get stuff right the first time... I had issues with a wrong part too... not to mention they are very slow to ship orders these days... I ordered the top the third week of July, it didn't arrive until the middle of August. I then had to wait a week to have a weekend off from work and realized we had two left rear door surrounds (right one was missing)... then had to wait another week to get the correct one... then had to wait 2 weeks because of work and last weekend it was raining... so this weekend we got a lot accomplished, too bad the weather is starting to turn. I should be able to enjoy the top completely down for a few more weeks at which point I'll probably put the hard top back on for the duration of the winter.

I have to say, however, that having the hard top and freedom panels completely removed a few weeks ago for a couple days was really, really cool. It was the first time I had completely removed and driven with the top gone and I loved it... that soft top is going to be down all next summer... I may even sell off the hard top because frankly, while its easy to remove... the soft top doesn't require storage when it's down.

Thanks again,
Jeff

Heade Problems

I am having problems at this same point putting my soft top together. I am not sure about putting screws through the soft top and want to make sure I have it right. Could some one explain this step better or have some pics.

OK, got ours done...

First the screws don't go through the top! There is rib (covered piece of cord) at the very edge of the top. That fits into a channel on the header and when you screw the 2nd piece of the header on, the pressure holds it in place. You must look hard to find the hole in the center of the top that lines up with the notch in the header (it's tiny). Use plenty of tape to hold it in place, the tape stays on but doesn't show when finished. The pics are not good for attaching the sunrider cables. Do it logically, not how the picture looks.

Mine is going to the shop next week to see if they can explain to me how to open the sunrider and not have the windows unseat from the door surrounds. Flapping windows are gonna drive my husband nuts.... Other than that, and the fact that the leading edge of the windows are a terrible design, it's pretty nice. Don't know why they decided they didn't need to secure the windows into the door surrounds? The don't sit in there well at all... My TJ is much better in it's window design.

Sorry I didn't get back to you on this, but I'll help with any additional questions you have, as best I can.

I appreciate the answer one other thing the wife thought maybe we should put the frame on the jeep before putting the cloth to on. In trying this it is not folding out right and the 2 brackets that have the strap on them the bottom one is hitting the bracket mounted to the jeep so it will not come in farther. I was wondering if he had pics on this or could let me know if I have the bracket backwards. The directions show that N goes on the bottom of the bracket mounted to the jeep.

N is the center bow "2", the fabric straps get screwed to the "3" bow. I can't picture what kind of problem you are having, but I can say that it'll be easier to take the top out of the Jeep, till you get the the fabric installed on the header, then install it on the Jeep to fasten the rest of the fabric to the bows. If you can post up some pics, that might help. When you install the fabric to the header, lay the frame on the ground with the fabric laying down in front of it, inside facing up. Then after you get the rib in the channel, screw on the header, seat the pockets, and flip the fabric over the bows.

The owner's manual say not to drive over 40 MPH with the Sunrider open unless you remove the rear window.
