I'd go to the Jeep site, and watch this nice man give an explanation. It's pretty decent.

Any written explanation will be complex as the top in not simple in design. It has to cover a lot of area and has a lot of parts to make that happen. When I put mine in for the first time I had two sets of directions. The one that came inside the box with the top and the one that was in the owner's manual. Because mine was from jeep and arrived in a box (didn't come inside the jeep) it was completely dissassembled. The dealership didn't want to know me on this item. I began at 8:00 at night one night in july 08 to assemble it and didn't get done until 4 in the morning. I was being careful and still ended up getting the rear roll bar mount plates on upside down. I finally just laid it out on the driveway and put it together the way it looked like it should go and just consulted the pictures once in a while. I've been using it for two summers now and it has been a great asset to have with the jeep. I live in MA and like having the hard top in the winter. We are getting into freedom top open weather now and can't wait to take it off. Let us know how you make out with your top.

Sounds like a nice dealership if they took the time to do it for you.

Install it in the trash can and just take off the Freedom Top panels when you want some air and sunshine. The effect for the front seat occupants is the same as taking the soft top down and it's a heck of a lot easier. The soft top on the Unlimited is an incredible wrestling match to lower and raise, and that's AFTER you get it installed! The nice man's explanation in the Jeep video is done in a well-lit, calm, climate controlled studio and you can bet it was rehearsed and the scenes shot many, many times. It will not be so easy when a sudden thundershower pops up. Can you tell I don't think much of the Unlimited soft top?

I love the soft top. I keep a tarp in the car for those thunderstorm moments....or just enjoy the shower while putting the top up....no need to stress over it. Although I guess there are some neatnicks out there who stress over any little spill on their seats or carpets. I take the plumber approach...if I get a little sh1t on my hands...even if it is not my own while working on a customer's plumbing...it'll wash off. No need to spaz on it. Just wash it off. Don't worry, be happy, one of my favorite songs.

Until that s*** exposure gives you hepatitis A. Seriously, it could prove to be a quite serious health issue for you if you're not careful.

I was speaking in parable. I didn't mean to imply that plumbers wouldn't need to be careful and use proper soap and a brush for under the fingernails...etc. I was saying that most folks who own a jeep don't sweat every little spill, mud slinging event including rains storms.
