Soft Top Pro Tip: 2008 Model Year

So, I got *super* excited about trying out the soft top on the jeep I got last month. It finally stopped raining up here in Portland, OR for just long enough, and the temperature was up to about 50F. I thought, "YES YES YES," as I wanted to give it a go.

On the 2008 Jeep, there's a lovely feature that helps keep your top pinned to the rest of the jeep in an effort to dampen wind noise and keep the rain out. These are molded plastic rails that are part of the window frames around the full doors. When you go to get your top up, chances are the edges are caught around these rails, and as I read in a few posts online, you need to use some effort to get the top out from around these rails to be able to fold it.

Well, I gave it a go. And I snapped these rails clean off the frames on both sides. I didn't damage the top, thankfully, but now I've got to buy replacement window frames for both sides, to the tune of about $80 a piece.

Lesson for any other noob out there: DON'T JUST REEF ON IT. Temperature matters, as does, apparently excitement and caffeine levels.

Also, I learned that if you are a smoker, chances are your ashes are getting collected in the window frame. I am not a smoker, but clearly the person who owned the jeep prior to me was.
