Just bought new 2015 JKU with soft top and wonder if anyone found alternate ways to secure the rear window open other than rolling it up and using the elastic straps which can scratch the window?
Several guys here say they just allow theirs to flop down inside the tailgate or on to their security decks. Personally, I just bite the bullet and take it out.
Some others say they just roll the window with a microfiber blanket and still use the elastic straps. I haven't been brave enough to try it yet, though.
No matter how careful you try to be it is going to get scratched up eventually. Use it the way it is designed.
The elastic straps on my 2010 were stretched to the point they weren't much good. I cut them off and bought a couple of straps made for backpacks that allow me to cinch things up tight. I can now roll mine into a much smaller cylinder.
Even after 5 years of no special care and a lot of driving through tree branches and wiping a lot of mud and dirt off mine are a long way from needing replacement.
Thanks to you both, wasn't sure how quick things get scratched. If I took it out then I'd have to find a spot in the jeep to stow it safely, guess that's the next question. The microfiber towel idea is interesting too.
I made a window roll for my jeep out of stuff I bought at Walmart. Cost me next to nothing, except some time. Two fleece blankets, some outdoor canvas for a storage bag and some velcro. I also used a section of pool noodle in the center to keep the roll from collapsing in on itself. Figuring out how to lay it out took the most time. Sewing it was like four seams.
I bought some of the fleece blankets at Walmart. They are like $3 each and it takes 4 of them layered between the windows and then I roll them up and cinch them with paracord. Makes a great and cheap soft top window roll and no scratches either.
What ever you do...DONT roll the back window up with the lower bar still installed and hang it from the elastic bands. I did this with the sunrider top open and drove from Tampa FL, into mid South Carolina until it got dark out and too cold, not to mention a bad traffic jam on I-95 and mosquito's were eating me alive. I unrolled the back window, to discover that the weight of the bar or something caused a 1.5 inch tall x the width of the entire window scuff/ lots of small scratchs to form. 2 actually, one at eye level just above the height of the spare tire, and one a bout a 1/4 of the way up from the base of the window. The window is ruined, nothing is getting the marks out. Learned that the hard way
I use these. I replaced the factory elastic straps with these. You can cinch it and the soft part of the Velcro touches your window. I also roll mine up in a towel, especially over the tailgate bar without any issue or scratching. I recommend the Outlaw Straps.
If you had a two door you could do what i do .i take the back window and tuck it on top of the roll cage.but with the slant of the jku roll cage I don't think it will work
