Soft Tops

Hey Wrangler Forum,
Just bought an '07 unlimited. It came with a hard top but I live in New Orleans and it's starting to get real nice out down here. I could use some help with deciding on a soft top combination. A straight OEM soft top or a bestop soft top is more than I want to spend so i am considering a bikini/tonneau combination. Basically I want to have a combination that protects from rain but can quickly be converted to total open air driving. I'm not concerned about protection (if someone wants to get into the jeep they are going to regardless of what kind of top I have). Any suggestions or comments on what you all have? Thanks a lot.

I am pretty much in the same situation you are in. On Saturday I picked up an 07 Unlimited w/ a hard top. I really want to get a soft top and I have found several on Craigslist for between $700-800. These are new, never used tops. So look around your local Craigslist and see what is out there. Other than that there is not much else I can do for you.
For now I am just going to take the front panels off and maybe leave the tailgate glass up, all door windows open or better yet....doors off.

You've got three main choices, with several options in each choice:

1. Full soft top, with all the necessary hardware. Supertop is the obvious choice, but there are others. There's a budget line with several competitors (Pavement Ends is my personal favorite of the budgets. Any guesses why? )
These tops have bows, door surrounds, and all the hardware you're going to need.

2. "Modified" full tops. Bestop's Trektop, plus Viking, and a couple of others make tops that use very little hardware, but instead use the roll bars for support. They're a bit cheaper, a bit easier to put up and down, but still offer full top protection.

3. Bikini tops, and similar. We make a Safari Bikini that covers the back seat too, and uses a full windshield channel, so it provides pretty decent coverage. There are no side windows with this option, but great open-air experience, plus shade.

My recommendation? Grab one or more of the big catalogs from JC Whitney, Quadratec or 4wd. They make great "wish books" and let you see lots of the available options right next to each other.

Thanks for considering Bestop!

As danimal said, craigslist is great. Sold a bunch of my OEM take-offs on there. Just do your research, and try the top on your Jeep before you pull the trigger- Mark W.

+1 on the modified soft tops. I'm pickup-up an unlimited hartop soon and will be buying a trektop to go with it. I like the trektop price, full softtop protection, and easy of install/removal.

Thanks Danimal! Sometimes I'm way too lazy... Well there ya go, minimal hardware needed = less expensive, and they look cooler than factory tops, IMO.
