Sound System

I just bought a 2013 Sport. Looking to add a new radio, speakers, etc. Any ideas on what I should get to get better radio sound?

Kenwood and Pioneer head units seem to be the better options right now. Look for a double din unit. I'm currently waiting for CES announcements to see what comes out before I decide.

If I were going with an aftermarket stereo I would look at one with NAV. They have come down a good bit in price and have tons of other goodies now. Just put an Alpine in my sons TJ and it has bluetooth and does pandora and is designed to work with Android and Apple both. Most offer great Apple support but not many do Android .

I have a Pioneer AVH-X5500BHS on it's way to me along with Polk speakers for dash and sound bar. I have already installed Garmin Montana 600 on Ram mount to a Vector eDock.

Why distinct GPS vs the stereo? From everything I can tell, handheld GPS are much easier to plug into a computer and pull the GPS track from as well as loading custom maps - think old topographic maps scanned in rather than the very few options you have on purchased DVD updates with the in-dash nav units. It is without a doubt more cluttered than an in-dash nav unit.

For off road you absolutely want a stand alone gps like Garmin ect for topo maps. I have a Garmin handheld that I can load topo maps and points on but when funds allow I am going with an after market stereo with NAV but will keep the Garmin for off road..The in dash NAV is a much better experience for paved road travel.No wires and clutter.Its there when you need it just touch the screen.When not needed its just a stereo.

The cost of updates are non issue as they only update every few years and most of the updates are a waste. My Garmin has had 3 updates in 3 years and non of it was anything to get excited about.A few corrections and more POI .I didnt need any of it and will not pay for any updates as I have now learned they are a waste. By the time I really need an update I will have a new unit.

Ivoryring, I just got a Pioneer double din head unit for Xmas -- haven't installed yet. Would love your feeback once you have yours in if it's going to be soon? I'm also looking at the kicker sound bar speakers.

I'll give my opinion on the installation too. I put a Pioneer AVH-X2500BT in my 2012 about a week ago. I bought if from Crutchfield, so I got instructions on how to remove the dash. Far simpler than I thought. Remove 4 screws on dash. 1 under the tray on top of the dash, 1 under the power window controls, and two under the steering wheel. All easy to get to.

Used a PAC harness to connect to the Jeep and allow use of steering wheels controls. The PAC instructions tell which wires to splice to connect the Pioneer to the PAC harness. About 14 wires to splice together. This was the longest part of the installation. I has to remove a metal frame that held the OEM stereo in the dash. I also had to cut a small plastic piece in the dash that interfered with the top of the Pioneer. This piece was behind the dash that I took out so it wasn't noticeable after dash was place back in. Took me about 2 hours total. Now that I've done one, I think I could do it in an hour if I ever did it again.

There are instructions on the forum for replacing your head unit, but they didn't show me everything I had to do.

I got the head unit today - waiting on more CB parts - I want to wire it all up when I have the dash apart once, not tear into it twice. I may, while I've got it all apart, install the CB someplace inside the dash if I can find a place. I got the same PAC harness - have to find a hidden/secure nook for... lets see... rev camera power brick, two crossovers, SiriusXM brick, SWC brick... I think that's everything. I'm really hoping I can use the built in mic and Sirius antenna, rather than running those new.

I installed a Kenwood ddx419 double din a couple weeks ago in my 13 JK. Ordered from Crutchfield and used the PAC harness. I also have Polks on the way
