Spare Key - How to: Chipped Transponder Sentry

Just an informational thread, most of this info is scattered elsewhere. If you don’t have a 3rd key, you should make one.

If you’ve lost your spare key, you are likely off to the dealer for another. If you bought your Jeep used and it came with one key, you are off to the dealer for a spare.
A second key with a fob (remote to unlock doors and start) from the dealer is around $225.

If you can forego the buttoned fob, you can have two working spare keys for about $16.
This works on a 2008, 2010, 2012, and the 2013 models), probably the other years I did not try. I have made about a dozen keys over the years for my Jeep/Dodge vehicles.

Here is what you need to do:

Go to eBay and search “Chrysler Key 700”, there are a few different uncut blanks, the Y164-PT works.
Here is an active listing:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/CHRYSLER-TRANSPONDER-CHIP-UNCUT-IGNITION-KEY-700-x2-/400209288323?pt=Motors_Car_Truck_Parts_Accessories &hash=item5d2e551c83

2 keys for $12.15 delivered.

Take your original key and these two to the local hardware store. Ask them to cut them. If they ask, tell them they are chipped keys and you know how to program them, you have done this before.
Home Depot usually cuts them for free, but lately they balk at cutting customer provided blanks (even though you offer to pay for the cutting and they don’t sell them)

Also, some locksmiths claim they can’t cut a chipped key (they can, they are just lazy). A 40 yr. old key cutting machine is all you need.

Programming is often simple but somewhat depends on year, or whether you have the EVIC dash, look in your manual under “key programming”, it’s generally something like:

Step 1, Insert first factory key and turn ignition on for 5 seconds, remove key.
Step 2, Insert second factory key and turn ignition on for 15 seconds, remove key.
Step 3, Insert new key, wait about 30 seconds, remove it.

My manual said to wait for a chirp and three flashes, I never heard the chirp or saw the 3 flashes but it programmed them nonetheless.
I’ve found leaving the new key in 30 -40 seconds is enough time to all the Sentry system to recognize it.

Start car with new key, if it dies after a couple of seconds, you didn’t program it correctly and you need to start over.

Jeep uses a Sentry system which allows you to give your key to a deviant valet. He cannot make a working copy since he has only one working key.
By forcing the user to insert two working keys, it’s assumed the user is the owner, allowing the Sentry system to recognize the third key.

If you only have one key, you can get the 2nd and 3rd keys cut, and the dealer should program the 2nd key for about $50, you or he can do the 3rd.
You can program using a working cheapie key as a master key. You don’t need factory keys. (did this on my ’08)

If you lock the car (my ’12 Rubicon or ’10 sport) with the buttoned factory fob, and use the cheapie key to unlock it, the horn may sound until you put the key in the ignition, so while the inexpensive key works, it’s not the same as a button fobbed factory key.

I have not programmed a remote keyless entry fob, they are about $60 and claim that they work.

Thanks for the info on this. Just ordered a pair of blanks. I had read about the programming in the owner's manual, and wanted to get a couple of spare keys.

The FOBs have gotten so cheap everyone should do this because the alternative is painful.

I went to Home Depot today and I had 2 spare keys made for free! Really easy to program and I didn't hear any chirp sound but keys are programmed. I got the blank keys from eBay.

I received two grey colored blanks from eBay, and had them cut for free while shopping at Lowe's. They programmed fine for my 2013 jk. The Jeep manual says the Sentry System will support up to a total of 8 keys.

Does anyone know if the rock key from quadratec will work? I saw it in my brothers Cherokee magazine and it said its for the newer grand Cherokee.

I had no luck with my Reomte Start. The lock/unlock buttons and panic button works, but the remote start didn't take. I tried with 2 separate keys.

Suposidly, it's on page 18 of the manual. Basically you insert the first key and turn the ignition to run (No need to start the Jeep). Leave it in for 10 seconds, then remove it. Insert your second key, turn it to run (no strat) and leave it for 10 seconds, then remove it. Insert the uncoaded key, turn to run and wait for the ding. Poof, programmed key.

I have been fighting with this for over a week now.
I am trying to use a Keyport Slide (http://mykeyport.com) but we have not been able to get the transponder to code to the jeep. We have tried several aftermarket key and nothing seems to work.

Went to my dealer and all they will say is "It is an aftermarket key those never work".

We (The locksmith and I) have tried several different brands of aftermarket keys and none of them are working with the on board programming. I think that there is a problem with the jeep but all the dealer will say is that it is the fault of the aftermarket key and they refuse to show me that it works with am oem blank (I have a nontransponder cut key to do the test with) unless I am willing to spend $70 on a blank.

I am just fit to be tied at this point. I mean if the OEM keys were ~20-30 I'd just buy one and cut the transponder out but at 70 (uncoded) I wont do it.

I'm sorry the dealers should not be allowed to gouge us on keys like this. Hell they want $30-$54 just to program a key. Maybe this is me whining but I'm just aggravated.

I see you have a 2014 Wrangler. After reading many different Jeep forums, for some reason, there seems to be an "issue" with late model 2013's and 2014's with self-key programming.

All of the self-key programming problems I have seen on the many different Jeep forums are usually late 2013 and 2014 Wranglers. The 2007's through early 2013's never seem to have a key programming problem. Why? I have no idea.

I would take it to the dealer and ask to have the Jeep's computer "re-flashed", and updated. Who knows, maybe there is some computer update that is available??

Before doing that, I personally would disconnect my battery, and leave it disconnected for about 10 minutes. Then reconnect the battery, and try to program the key again. I have no idea if this will work or not, but it is free for you to try.

Let us know what happens.

Good luck,

Mabar

Good info, thanks, OP!

I have a viper remote start and hate having a huge keychain with 2 fobs. Ordered a key off ebay for $7 bucks.

Thanks!

It's nonsense that aftermarket keys don't work!

Yes, I have heard there have been some "issues" with some of the cheaper, imported aftermarket keys, but the made in USA keys are very good quality, and every bit as good as the factory key.

Do a Google search for: "jeep wrangler jk transponder key usa" and lots of results will come up.

Get the made in the USA key if you want the best quality.

I ordered spares from ikeyless.com. This 1st key is $17.95 and additional keys are 35% off (or $11.67 each) You can also have them cut the keys after providing your VIN number. It's pricey ($49), but if you're the very particular type person, it may be an option for you.

My local hardware store cut my key for free, although I am guessing that many hardware stores will charge for key cutting.

programming keys

I got two of the blanks and home depot cut them for free. I have a 2014 and tried the programming sequence. Never heard any beeps, waited and used both factory keys. The key starts the motor and then it cuts off. Anyone have any other ideas??

Thanks..
