Spare tire and 3rd brake light

I'm getting 33" (well almost) Duratracs and alloys put on my 2011 Sport next week. Will I need to do anything different to mount the spare? I'm guessing that I will need to extend the 3rd brake light? Thanks for any help.

Don't forget several of the stock tires are 32", so going to 33s only adds about half an inch under your brake light.

My 33x12.5R15 DuraTracs, for example, did not require an extended brake light. It's still perfectly visible over the tire.

I did add a set of the Daystar extended bumpstops to replace the factory bumpstops that could no longer reach the spare tire.

If the set up you're going with is particularly heavy, you'll be well served to replace your tire carrier. My set up was very close in weight to the stock set up, and so I just used the stock carrier as is. It's been fine for quite a while now.

Inferno Girl carried a 35" spare and didn't have to raise her 3rd taillight bracket, IIRC.

Try it and see...I think you'll be okay.

Thanks! I think I will just wait and see. No sense fixing a problem that might not exist. I can't wait to get rid of these stock tires and wheels. I look like I'm rolling around on donut wheels.

Bought these on Quadratec. Fit perfect on empty lug but holes. Very bright during day and night. Easy hook up.

kbwwolf,
I don't think my stock tires look as off road as that cruller.

I am currently running 35" BFG MT's on the stock carrier and it covers the lower part of the factory 3rd brake light, but it can still be seen.

I just removed it on one wrangler because I wanted to hang a bike rack on the spare...and the state inspectors never noticed...and neither did the police...for 6 years. It was that way when I sold the jeep.

As most have said - you should be good with Duratracs at that size.

For future reference, often, it's not the brake light you have to worry about, but the clearance to the bumper. There is a bumper spacer that pushes the mouting of the spare out 2-3" from places like Quadratec. I got one for my 33" Nitto Trail Grappler, but didn't need it.

The other consideration is the weight of a larger tire. Again, you should be good w/the Duratracs, but, if you went with a thicker/heavier/larger tire, you may not feel warm & fuzzy with it on the stock mount - especially if offroading a lot and subjectingn it to lots of bumps. Then you'd go with a tire carrier or bumper w/tire carrier.

Here in Ohio - I ended up just yanking my 3rd brake light off. Perfectly legal to do so - but let's not get into THAT debate (many threads have discussed this for some odd reason...)

Thanks sknyfats! Hopefully the clearance to the bumper will be fine. They are only 33's so I'm hoping that I'm ok.

No problems. I had 315/70-17s Duratracs and the brake light at the stock height was high enough.
