Spiderweb shade....My .02

So I scored a spider web jkini. Got it for 30 bucks used from eBay.

Build wise, it's built like a tank. The grommets aren't loose and the material is much thicker and stiffer than you would think.

As a shade. It's nice. Keeps the sun from blaring you in the eyes. you can see through it...sort of. But it's still very opaque. It almost feels like you have a full top on.

As a small drizzle guard. It works well. Light sprinkle outside and stayed fairly dry. It wouldn't be much good in a down pour. But I'd imagine it would be better than nothing, and it wasn't designed for that anyway.

Don't let anyone fool you. This thing isn't compatible with the freedom top panels. Sure you can do some fumbling around and get the top panels secured with the shade on, but when your done, the shade must be completely disconnected from all 3 footmans loops, which leads to another issue. You can either loop the balls around themselves and leave them dangling which causes some annoying clatter, or shove them in the glove box. You also can't use the wing bolts in the back. So if you ever wanted to do front panels on and back off, you'd have to remove the bungees that go through the bolt holes.

All in all, this thing adds about 5 minutes to the freedom panel removal and install and scrapes up your knuckles when trying to turn the L brackets.

Truthfully...
I would have been better off spending 30 bucks on a nice pair of sunglasses, it would have accomplished the same thing and been much easier to deal with.

If I lived somewhere the sun was just blaring down mercilessly upon my bald scalp, and was able to run top off, more than top on, then I may have a different opinion. But for my location, and my specific needs, I give this product a big thumbs down.

Mine doesn't give me any problems with the freedom tops. I think you're supposed to remove the Velcro pieces but I just punched right through them to make it easier and the grommets don't flap against the roll bar with them always on.

Just installed the JK4D version moments ago. I have not yet driven with it, or reinstalled the hard top. I sense that the freedom panels may be a challenge.

Not sure I am happy with tautness yet. Perhaps I didn't install it quite right. Anyhow, I plan to go for a drive this evening, as it is still sunny and triple digits at the moment.

They should be where the freedom top screws go.

Actually I just saw you have the jkini which only covers the front area right? I have the longer version so it is probably different.

Yeah mine just covers the front seats. There's no Velcro.

Sunglasses won't keep your head from getting sunburned or you sweating your ass off at red lights. SWS is awesome. Don't blame the top because you can't work it right.

I can work it just fine jack ass.

And there are these things called...hats. You should try one.

In an example of posting before thinking, I now watched the install video (at the suggestion of my better half) and was able to improve fitment to the point everything is now taut.

Lol sorry, I'm a bit touchy today. It's been a rough day.

What I meant to say without the defensive and immature insults is:

It's not hot or sunny enough around here to really utilize the shade. If I lived in Miami or somewhere, I can see where it would be nice to have. Hence why I said "my specific needs."

And if you watch the install video of the jkini. It shows that you are supposed to run the two bungees through the freedom top bolt holes. That pretty much nixes the ability to use the bolts.

If you look at the website, you'll see that to reinstall the hard top, you have to unhook the shade from the 3 footmans loops in front.

Now again, if I lived somewhere that the blaring sun was just unbearable and it actually got over 80 degrees outside, then maybe the added hassle that it causes to work the freedom panels would be worth it. But for me and my needs, I'll probably take it off and sell it.

I'd give the full size a try. You don't run bungees through those two holes since it gets tied down in back and the sides. Only the the L brackets are slightly harder to reach but not really an issue for me.

I am really surprised of the negative posts on this product of late...I love the shade and yes i leave my full shade on all the time on my JKU with a hard top. My balls dont clank (ya said that lol) with the top on. Putting thr freedom tops takes a little effort but not that bad. The shade doesnt flap with the top fully off or with just the freedom tops off as you need to adjust the balls tight which means moving them forward or backward on the sport bar not always straight across.
just play with the balls (ya I said that also) and you will see what I am saying here.
I am a fair skinned (read RED HEAD) and old at that and I have to say it is very nice not to be in the burn ward of the local hospital due to me enjoying a topless experience (there is a sight for ya all lol)
just my two cents

When I drove 1,200 miles in a nekked Jeep in 2 days in temps up to 108 I sure liked my SWS. Hat was useless driving at 70-75 as it felt like it would blow off any minute.

I too was disappointed when I tried to put my hard top on over my spiderweb shade. I ended up frustrated and pissed as I yanked it off completely.

Overall I'm okay though. When the top is off and the sun is blaring, the SWS works really well and it's only in the summer that I run with my soft top which works fine with it. When it gets cold I'll just take it off before putting my hard top back on.

Hmm. Not much trouble here. I just remove the spideballs closest to the sound bar and I can reach my arm right in to secure the freedom panels. I can also get my panel screws in just fine. I take off 5 balls total. 3 small ones in front that are on the latches and 1 on each side by sound bar. Takes 30 seconds.

Good thing you don't need the bolts for the HT panels. I'm not sure I could live somewhere I didn't have sun.

Hey bent, orh is having a group buy on soft tops and some of the forum members are looking at buying. I have the Fastback top and love it! I took the whole top off in less then 5 min yesterday. Same with reinstall. It doesn't leak and looks fantastic. On the group buy the price is right and if you like the style its a no brainier.

I have the full shade on my JKU I love it . I have the Smittybult sun shade but this one's a lot better. When I put the top back on it was a little hassle to install the freedom panels. I undid the spyder balls on the side to close the latches, and they were difficult to reinstall. I later realized I could unlatch without removing the balls. The footman loops have to be removed and there is a slight sag but I fixed that by buying some bungee ball at harbor freight for a few dollars and shortening them a bit so they can wraparound the footman when their latched. I only wish it covered the sides better but no big deal

I don't get it either. Yeah, you don't have direct access to the L-brackets and you have to remove the bungees from the footman loops, but it's not hard. Plenty of room to put the middle spiderball back on and loop the left and right balls over the latches that secure the freedom panels. As for the rear L-brackets, I just unfasten the spiderballs at the rear of the front door and reach in. Takes like ten seconds. Some folks just fold it back over the back portion to expose the freedom panels when they are on.

It's not perfect but it's not bad.

Don't get me wrong here guys. It's a great product and well made. Just for my purposes, I don't much care for it.

Isn't that ORH soft top like 5k?

Bent Jeep, I have myself and 2 others buying the ORH top. Just need one more for the 4+ group discount. There are three options also so it's not like we all have to order the same top.

I'm going with the cargo top which at the group discount comes to $800 ($325 discount). The fastback Hudler has is going for $725 ($275 discount). These prices include shipping.

Really have to move fast on this if you want in. The sale isn't even available anymore on his website but I'm going to give him a call this morning anyways. I'll just order 2 for myself if you're not in.
