Sport bar light problem

I have a new to me 2012 JKU, all the lights turn on when I open a door and when I turn the switch on the steering column. However, the light on the sport bar has two buttons for each of the two lights, when either of these are pressed, the lights do not come on. Am I missing something? Shouldn't these lights come on by using the buttons on them?

From the manual - this is for a 2013 but should be the same I would suspect?

The sports bar reading lights (available on four-door
models) can be turned on by pressing the switches,
located on either side of the lens. Press a switch a second
time to turn the light off.

PS also this - do you have the dimmer set?

When a door is open and the interior lights are on,
rotating the dimmer control to the extreme bottom position
will cause all the interior lights to turn off. This is
also known as the “Party” mode because it allows the
doors to stay open for extended periods of time without
discharging the vehicle’s battery.

That's just it, the lights won't come on by pressing the buttons, but they come on when the door is open or the steering column lever is twisted to turn them on.
