Exclamation Steering Damper & Pre-Mature Front Tire Wear

2010 Jeep Wrangler Rubicon (stock suspension/tires)

Took my Jeep in for oil/rotation on Jan '10 and asked the mechanic to check a shimmy I was feeling in the steering. When I picked up the Jeep, I was told it was fine.

Fast forward three months. I'd contnued to observe the shimmy and louder that usual road noise from my off road tires. Then, I just happened to glance at my front tires the other day and noticed they were wearing at least twice as fast as the rear ones ones and showed obvious flat spots, i.e. cupping.

I took the Jeep back to the dealership. The mechanic stated that I had lost all of the fluid from the shock in the steering damper. He then told me with a straight face, that the tire wear had nothing to do with the bad steering damper. The warranty covers the damper; but, Jeep doesn't want to replace my front two tires. Anyone have any thoughts.

This just isn't adding up for me. Does anyone have any inputs or similar experiences?

Sorry to hear that, but why did you let it continue to shimmy after you first told them and did you notice any oil residue from the dampner ???

Did the tires JUST start cupping and wearing funny, or are the NOW rear tires the same??

Why don't you have an alignment check done..That is the place to start from..

Something else may be at play here causing the issue with the steering stabilizer. You need to have your front end checked out thoroughly. If I'm reading what you wrote correctly, 3 months is a long time to let an issue go.

Bilateral cupping is usually caused by under-damping. It's been my opinion for years that the shocks on these things aren't up to the task.
The tires probably could have been balanced better too.

What are your long term plans for it? Lift/tires/wheels/bumpers/winch?

This is a good time to upgrade some things. Talk to the service manager and see what they can do. Maybe they can help and comp you some labor in good faith --- free installs on an OME damper, Bilstein shocks, tires, etc.
Tires cost them actual money; they can disappear labor cost.

My steering dampener leaked and I caught it because I experienced death wobble. and a strange puddle under it in my garage. Do you have that same problem? They should replace your dampener under warrenty if you still have one. I bet your screwed with the tires though I doubt they will compensate you for that.

I would continue to argue that obiviously the steering dampener caused the wear on the tires and they should compensate you for that especially since you mentioned something to the mechanic before it became an issue.

I still have some weird noises coming from my transmission/clutch and even though i've been to two different dealers and complained neither said there was a problem even though i've had one throw out bearing replaced because of noise and several first gear pop outs. I'm kind of in the mood that screw it, when the transmission dies they will have to replace because of the warrenty. I have records showing I have complained and they did nothing so it will be there fault.

I've driven older jeeps my whole life and decided to spoil myself with a brand new Rubicon 18 months ago. Early on I noticed the brakes squealing. With the top on it wasn't that noticable and it seemed to come and go. I had to take my jeep in for a recall and asked about it. They said it could be pollen or other small particles settling in and causing the temporary squeal. Now, 18 months in, my gas tank had been overflowing at the pump so I needed to take it in anyway. I'd also noticed the idle was really rough in traffic, the ride was getting louder and bumpier (I thought I might actually have something in a front tire from the noise) and the brakes were still squealing off and on. Diagnosis? They replaced the fuel tank without explanation. My front tires are completely jacked up with uneven wear. Significant uneven wear. They said I needed to rotate my tires more often and that front tire wear is normal for my Rubicon. I was floored that they looked that bad after 22K miles. Regarding the brakes, they said I had debris caught between my brake pad and rotor that had caused pitting. They said the pitting was so deep they couldn't resurface it. I questioned the liklihood of debris getting in there and the tech said it was pretty uncommon. So when he explained the phenomenon occurred on BOTH rear brakes I was pretty upset. Anyone have any input you could offer?
