Stenciled Plasti-Dip

Hey everyone. Been driving my '12 JKU stock for several months and finally did my first mod. Found an image online and created my own stencil then sprayed a few coats of Plasti-Dip. I want to add gator tracks up the driver side door leading to the hood next. Opinions?

Thanks for all the compliments.

cheap4tw: Unfortunately, I didn't take pics of the process but I'm considering pulling it off and re-doing it to make the gator longer. If I do, I'll take video or pics of the process.

madax34567: I used a projector to show the image on the wall, then traced it onto posterboard and cut the outline with an xacto knife. I then taped it to the jeepster with painters tape and newspaper.

For stencils, I like peel and stick shelf paper

You might have issues unmasking it with plasti-dip though.

Looks awesome!

You've given me a few ideas for a Redskins-themed stencil of my own using yellow plasti-dip on my deep cherry red paint...

Can you please describe the paint and peel steps of the process?

That looks awesome! I think you've given a bunch of people here a great idea. Hmm... multi-colored Plasti Dip to get different effects...?

Wow that looks amazingly good. How many coats did you spray on? Did you just let it dry completely and then remove the stencil, or while it was still wet? Did you have any issues with the edges?

paleh0rse and Lowerumble: I applied each coat and waited about 15 min between coats. After 5 coats, I removed the stencil. There was only one small part on one of the teeth that stuck but luckily it didn't break off. There was a bit of overspray under some of the thinner stencil parts but that came off with some rubbing alcohol and q-tips. It wasn't simple but it wasn't extremely difficult either...just tedious.

Perhaps I should try shelf paper as mentioned by aelwero.

Looks really good.

Shelf paper might be too sticky and difficult to remove.

See if you can find frisket film. It's used by airbrush artists to cut stencils. It might be more forgiving to remove.

I'm sure you can find it online, but if you have an arts & crafts store or maybe a hobby shop nearby you might find it there.

Very cool.

You can also get Avery SF 100 Paintmask Films -which I read might be cheaper than frisket film.
Similar stuff however, low-tac clear sheet, clean removability etc. You can also cut that on a vinyl cutter so could technically do more detailed stuff and less fiddling with a blade

I really want to like the idea, but won't it just peel off if you accidentally brushed against it? I know plastidip peels off, but I haven't dealt with it myself... How easy would it be to accidentally lose part, or even all, of your work?
