If it's an X or Sahara you have a Dana 44 in the rear and a Dana 30 in the front. Rubicons have 44's front and rear.

Do a google image search on Dana 30, 35, and 44. They have different shaped housings.

35 is oval, 30 is a rounded corner square, and 44 is... different. Kind of like a messed up octagon.

Just to add to that, JK~ X's, sports & sahara (non-rubicon) all came with D30 fronts & D44 rears. IIRC front D44 was custom option only in 07. Rubicons came standard with D44 front & rear.

Never heard of a D35 in a JK from the factory.

both need to match.. however 5.13 is real small in a dana 30, and frankly I would be worried about busting that with 37's even open.

4.88 no way, especially if you've got an auto. 5.13 is good for a manual, automatic you'll want 5.38. stock that's as low as you can get it. you're getting close to 1-ton territory...REAL AXLES

Isn't it the other way around GH? Auto should be 5.13 and manual should be 5.38

no, you want your automatic gears to be lower with JK's. the higher the number, the lower the gear.

the reason is the auto is programmed for fuel efficiency, so it shifts early. manuals you can stay in gear longer. autos you can't. this is why folks say their JK is underpowered. they're in 3rd by 30mph

the other reason is OD. it's elusive even in stock form and has no guts. the lower gears give it a little.

EDIT: the problem is 5.38 is small like 4jeepin mentioned so it's the weak point and it would SUCK to bust em'. you've got to be easy, or get larger axles to counter it

I'm not 100% but I think TJ's (except 03 and later) get geared the same regardless on trans. I might be wrong though

by same I mean auto vs manual. TJ's on 35's want 4.88's. JK's on 35's manual wants 4.88, auto 5.13

Yeah, I didn't pay attention to the vehicle year. I just threw the 35 in since I know my 2000 TJ has one.

I hear ya. I'm on 35's now, but she sees alot of street. when she's paid for I'll get something else and she'll be a full-time toy. I'd like 38's or 40's on some 1-tons. that's some bookoo bucks though. maybe. I'm pretty happy with 35's though. they get it done.

Few things you can do:

1. smaller tires
2. At tires
3. Change gears.

What MPG are you getting now?
