Exclamation STRANGE Wiper issues!

I've owned a few Wranglers...usually older models. I could find my way around them pretty easily.

Now I own a 2008 JK, and I can't figure this one out.

Here's the issue:

I went on a small road trip (50 miles) and it drove fine. Parked the car. A few hours later I go to start it up and the wipers are going full speed with the switch on "off", and the motor is acting funny. I then turned the wipers to intermittent, and they stopped...and the engine bogged down and quit. I ran it in idle today to test it, and like yesterday, it will stay running so long as I have the wipers set to "off"(but they are still wiping...go figure). As soon as I turn the wipers to intermittent, the engine bogs down like it's running lean and the wipers die. At the same time, when I turn the switch back to "off", the wipers come back on, and the engine comes back to life (though running a little rough still). AND, while listening to the idle of the engine with the wipers off (still wiping of course), while the wipers make a pass one way across the windshield, the engine will start to die, but when the wipers are passing back, the idle goes back to normal. I am getting error codes of P0171 and P0174 (lean mix), which I suppose are caused by the wiper malfunction.

I've never seen this before, and I am at a loss. Anyone know how to fix this issue?

Uhmmmm...loose battery terminals..bad computer......bad ground at battery. Messed up bcm.......wow.....I wouldn't even know how to troubleshoot that and I've worked on vehicle electrical systems for the last 10 years! (up until about a year ago)

I would also say most likely bad ground. The wiper park switch needs a ground to park the wipers. Eng functions also rely one good grounds.

Disconnect the wiper motor and see if that narrows down the problem. Dodge had a problem on Rams (and other vehicles( with the wipe stalk switch. The switch, via the instrument cluster and TIPM control the wiper circuit. The stalk switch was $100, the motor $50 to $100 depending on sourcing. I'd start with vehicle grounds and disconnect the motor. Clear the codes and see what happens.

I'm going to try disconnecting the wiper motor. I've cleared the codes already, but I'll do it again when I check the motor grounds. I'm pretty convinced it's the motor fouling up or the grounds to it. I can't see what else would drain the engine like that.

Well, I disconnected the wiper motor and........no start.....nothing. I plugged the wiper motor back in, turned the switch to off and it started. It's either a cross somewhere in the loom, or the computer is glitched. Maybe I should flash it, as I was told. I even had a dealer mechanic look at it and he was clueless.

Why does it have to be me!!! Somebody just shoot me now!

Well they need to put a better tech on it at the dealer. You should find, clean, and tighten all the grounds - sounds like the ECM/PCM might be getting its ground through the wiper (which is of course not how it was designed). If you can connect just the ground of the wiper circuit, and if it starts, start working backwards.

Well...found it. The engine and the wiper motor share the same ground. Ground was fixed and cleaned and the things runs great again ($250 later). Hopefully this experience will benefit others on this forum.

Here's another strange wipper problem. I posted this same entry on another post where we are talking about TIPM issues, but thought you may be interested. I'm still wrestling with my problem. Here is my story:

One thing i have on my 2008 JK wrangler is a loose positive post connector going into my TIPM.

I can wiggle the post a bit which means whenever i hit a bump or shut my door, or just bump my vehicle a weird thing happens.

My wipers go on.
My washers go on.
My horn goes on.

The only way i can stop it is to pull over, open the hood and smack the top of the TIPM.

I can reproduce the effect if i just wiggle the wire that goes to the positive post connector.

I've tighted down the bolt, but it appears to still be loose. I would really like to get some help to tell me if i need to get a replacement TIPM, or if i could somehow fix this.

it's scary just getting in my jeep, since at any time driving or just standing still, the S**T may start going off.

help is appreciated...
