Swapped tires. Wow what a difference.

First off, someone should have told me not to buy Trail Grappers with only having 3.21's, lol. I put an ad on Craigslist about swapping my wheels and tires for same wheels and any kind of all terrains. I got messaged an hr later. Guy had same wheels as me and some Toyo Open Country AT2's. Both our tires were 3 months old and around 3k miles. Mine were stock size and his were 265/65's. A little shorter and wider but my Jeep is a full time daily now. Told him if he came to me I'd even swap. We swapped yesterday morning and just me driving around last night and today is a night and day difference. It's alot more peppy, doesnt lug as much, and my mileage has increased at least 3-4 mpg. Them Trail Grappers were just that much heavier and noisy to boot. I'm glad I made the swap.

Just thought I'd share my story, lol

Toyo's I swapped for.

Nitto's I had.

I didnt think the Nitto's being stock size was gonna make my MPG go down so much and lug as bad as it did. I know, I know, 3.21's, blah blah blah. But I guess increasing the weight just 10-12 lbs a tire makes that much of a difference. Only reason I got them is all I ran on my junk Jeeps was mud tires. This being my daily it just wasnt working out.

3-4 mpg is highly suspect. Have you recalibrate the speedo? If not there's your mileage difference.

Yes I did. GPS certified, lol. I'm just going off what I was getting and what I'm getting now. I was averaging 15.2-15.4 I topped off yesterday after we swapped, drove all day today, topped off again this evening. It came out to 18.2 mpg. So 2.8 to 3 MPH increase, lol. According to Toyo's site my tires now are 41 lbs. The nittos were 58. So 16 lbs difference a tire.

That's a very nice tire for the street you have there

I am betting your new ones are slightly shorter if 265/65-17 vs 255/75-17 so not only lighter but effectively gives you higher (numerically) gear ratio so you are probably driving more in your power band so not having to give it as much throttle. Also tire tread much more efficient with the Toyos.

And before I hear it it let me explain. Yeah, my tires were worth a little more. But I didn't need them. My Jeep was just a toy, but some changes forced me to sell my other truck so now its my daily. I paid $1055 for 5 tires, $60 to mount and balance. I was just gonna sell my grips and buy some all terrains, but the best I could do was $910 for 5 tires and another $60 mount and balance. So that's $970. I would have been lucky to get that for my tires "used" even thou they were brand new with only 3k on them. So I got what I wanted, he got what he wanted. Win all the way around.

I've been sitting here just reading different comments about them and you got people claiming they've gotten 60-70k miles out of them. Wow. I ran a set on my 3/4 ton once and got like 40k out of them, so its possible I guess.

Glad it worked for you but there is no magic. Shorter tire with a less aggressive tread pattern and more compliant sidewalls provide a better ride and slightly better performance with your high gear ratio.

Topped off again this am and made this trip. 70-75 mph the whole way. Before I was averaging 14.8-15.0 mpg on this trip. Now this. I know it isnt much but I'm excited, lol

17.84 mpg. Double checked my speedo again with GPS and my phone. Dead on. I know it isn't much and some don't care, but this being my daily now I'd like to get all I can.

The Nittos are pretty heavy. IMO, You made the right move for a daily driver that won't see the trails any time soon.

It's all about what makes you happy. It's funny how there's a polarization though, the OP on this thread is all about daily driving efficiency while most other posters to the forum are about aggressive looks and off-road performance - yet everyone is cool and nonjudgmental. I like this forum and I like Jeep owners, you guys are alright :)

Yeap. Like stated, my Jeep, as all my past Jeeps, have always been toys. Well, life changes forced me to sell my daily. Its was the most reasonable thing to do. I know a Jeep isnt the best daily, but I can make it the most I can. Until I can get caught back up and find me another daily, I'm gonna rack up the miles on this one.

Just a little advice. Don't get a divorce. Better yet, don't get married in the first place, lol
