Synthetic in a 3.6?

I am at 26k miles on my 2012 and thinking about going with synthetic oil. What are the pros and cons and will it void the 5 year/100k mile warranty?

Just make sure the synthetic you use meets Chrysler specs for the engine needs. You should have no problem at all. I've been running synthetic in my 2012 since 1500 miles.

I run synthetic in everything I own have for years. Only proof I needed was the parts truck we used at work a 1997 chevy S-10 4 cylinder before it was totaled last year it had 410,000 miles on it and did not use one drop of oil between oil changes.
I keep seeing that commit about meeting Chrysler specs well my Jeep dealer uses Mobil 1 and according to some here for some reason it has not yet been approved for Chrysler although the Dodge viper came with Mobil 1 from the factory.
Your warranty can NOT be voided because of your brand of oil period. On this forum you read all the time about warranty's being void for all sorts of reasons my dealer has changed drive shafts after guys did lifts under warranty.

IIRC Chrysler & Mobil are no longer friendly, Chrysler's official oil of choice is now Pennzoil.

I have 12K on my 2012, last oil change (#3) I asked for synthetic. Dealer told me they used Pennzoil. Reciept stated Mobil1. When I asked about it they told me they ran out of Pennzoil. I asked about the warranty, they didnt know anything about the approval being pulled. They told me not to worry about it. Im pretty sure that the Mobil1 isnt going to suddenly eat my main bearings....

I wonder if you and I go to the same dealer because of the same answers I seem to get. The truth of the matter is simple. Dealer will tell you it isn't a problem until it becomes a problem.

Void the warranty? No.

Synthetic doesn't thicken in cold weather and tolerates extreme heat far better than mineral oils.

I'll chime in...Oreillys is selling their brand full synthetic right now for $20/5qt. I purchased one extra quart and filter and changed myself. $36 bucks total for my oil change. I'm ok with that.

Correction....actually only $30 for full syn oil change. The other $6 was for a drain pan I bought.

Does everyone get one complimentary oil change when they purchase a new wrangler ? I wasn't aware of that, what else do we get. Also when should I bring the jeep in for oil change

I was about to buy some castrol edge titanium (their top of the line synthetic) but noticed it doesn't meet the Chrysler ms-6395 standard. Guess I'll use the standard Edge (previously named syntec) until my warranty is up. I'm sure the titanium is better, but don't want to risk any warranty issues.

The cons:

It costs more.

Nobody has ever opened up two Jeep engines at 100K, one run on dino all it's life and the other run on synthetic all it's life, to show PROOF that synthetic does anything beneficial for your engine. It's all marketing and hear-say.

The pros:

It will make you feel better.

It helps to reduce our dependence on foreign oil.

As long as it meets the material specs in the owners manual you are fine.

Pros ? Tons. Cons ? NONE !
Pros : At high temps it takes Much longer to start changing viscosity.
At low temps it takes much lower temp to start changing viscosity.
Better protection of the engine.
Lasts MUCH longer then conventional oil.
Con : Cost, but it easily offset with prolonged mileage. I change mine at 5,000 ml, and conventional oil should be replaced at 3,000 ml.

Mobil 1 all the way.
Don't even pay attention on this BS that Mobil 1 "doesn't meet" Chrysler's specs. Not only does it meet the specs but it exceed it in every possible way.
The only reason Mobil 1 is not listed per Chrysler's specs is they didn't want to follow some idiotic requirement from Chrysler asking for 3 years test results.
Also, many dealers are using Mobil 1, and there is no way that product which exceeds the required specs can void the warranty in any possible way.

I did my first oil change at 3500 miles to Royal Purple 5w20 (meets ms 6395T) w/ Mopar filter. After 200 miles so far the (reset) avg mpg gauge shows an increase of 1.2 mpg in local driving. YMMV. next month a road trip to SA Texas from Mi will give me a good reading on wether economy is really improved or not.

My last car, a Neon R/T switched to Mobil 1 at 600 mi and was trouble free for 12 years and 130,000 miles.

The dealer we bought ours from two weeks ago gives all buyers free lifetime oil and filter changes.

The way they explained the program to me is that they purchase 4 oil change coupons from Chrysler on my behalf that I must use all 4 of at their dealership sometime during the year. As long as I use those 4 they will purchase 4 more for me to use the following year.

The agreement that I signed states that if I use any of them at another dealer, or if I don't use all 4 each year, the free lifetime oil change agreement ends. I'll probably take it in every 3,000 miles and adjust accordingly around November to make sure they're all used by the end of the year.

I'm sure they're mainly doing this to get me in there so they can try to sell me additional services. What they don't know is that I do all of my own routine maintenance and I have absolutely no interest in paying someone else to change my transmission fluid, etc. I'll gladly take the free oil and filter changes and the dealership is only 4 miles from my house.

How much oil are you guys putting in?

Also, odd question, If I put in 5 quarts of 5w30, and top off with 1/2 qt of 5w20, do I get 5w27?
