I just snapped my synthetic winch line on a Smittybilt X2O 12k winch. I was doing something I probably shouldn't have been and well, long story short, I need a new line. Any recommendations?
I think what he was saying is that it wasn't a straight recovery pull. Not sure. Steel might not of failed. It would be great if you would to share the details so that others may benefit from this.
It was a tossup between winchline.com or Viking Offroad for me, both with fairlead thimbles. Searching this site turns up both as highly regarded recommendations. I'm going with winchline. Irrespective of brand you choose, I'd consider 3/8" Dyneema to be a baseline requirement.
Must have been doing something wrong my synthetic rope is 6 years old and has pulled out at least 80 vehicles and I pulled out a Chevy Suburban a few weeks back.
This is what almost everyone of the guys in our jeep club uses. It's expensive but last almost forever.
WARN Spydura Synthetic Rope 80ft x 3/8 10,000-LB Capacity. I know there are some other good one out there. But stay away from the cheap stuff, we see that brake every summer. I have seen the cheap stuff brake on it's first time used. I use a 4 foot strap to hook to what ever I'm pulling out I hook my winch hook to the strap.
Just to clarify WARN says to replace the rope every year. Good that you are getting six years of service. I second the idea of NEVER wrapping a winchline around anything but a fairlead block.
I don't know why folks are afraid of steel rope breaking. If it's kept in good shape there shouldn't be a problem. I've spent a lot of time around cranes and they all use steel rope.
My guess on the annual replacement recommendation is that maintance plays a big role in longevity. Some are going think that since they are not using the winch they don't need to service the rope. It is the weekly user that cleans and maintains their rope regularly that actually gets the most life out of a rope. UV and road grit are killers yo synthetic.
If you don't use it much, get wire... Saves on up front cost and maintenance. If you find you are using it a bit upgrade to synthetic. My plan is to find out how much I use it and where and how and decide if synthetic is worth it for me.
Edit: as jedi9 said! It will be years before synthetic has as many pulls as wire. It is catching up fast, because everyone thinks that everytime a wire snaps someone is killed... There is a lot of wire out there. It works perfectly for the occasional wincher, like 99% of the people that have them now. If I was winching every week, I would have synthetic.
