Tailgate cover installed

I was going to plasti dip the front grill today, but it's too windy and with my wife out of town I've gotta keep an eye on my daughter today. So I put my smittybilt tailgate cover on. I would have ordered black, but I found coyote brown for only $35.

The instructions say to use a 7/64 drill bit, but I found after one screw that 1/8 is much better. The hardest part was using a screwdriver to put in the screws. (lovely that i discover my cordless drill battery is worthless.)

I don't see how. I thought about maybe some sort of magnet. But then I figured once you put some weight in the bags, they'd fall off the backing. So drilling it was.

Is there one for the rear seat? I've added a few bags to mine and love it!

looks good. I almost got the coyote brown...don't know why I didn't. We drilled various sized holes installing mine, mainly due to breaking 2 drill bits and not wanting to go out and buy more. Hubby asking me if I was sure I wanted to drill into my Jeep....like I was gonna change my mind.

They do have them, but only up to 2006. The JKs have a rear head rest and the current seat cover does not have cut outs for the head rest. I plan on buying one anyways and then cutting out a small area for the head rests and having a buddy's wife box stitch some addition webbing around it for support. Should be a pretty easy mod!!

I need to look into that. I have some stuff I want to put up, but don't have anywhere to put it. Thanks!

That is cool. I've seen them before but nto paid any attention to them. Do those bags come off or are they mounted permanantly? Seems the bigger bag would be better near the hinges. What colors are available?

The bags come off. The cover comes with 2, but you can order different ones from all over the place. I've seen black, coyote brown, olive drab, and ACU camo.

Chris,

Nice job. It looks like you were able to keep a much straighter line than I did.

I decided to strap the smaller bag to the larger bag and then I got a Smittybilt 1st aid bag. The Smittybilt bag is a 2-piece bag. It straps on using a flat piece with straps on one side and hook or loop on the other side. Then, the bag itself has the other half of the hook/loop material. Plus, it has a strap that keeps the bag snug with the backing piece.

Then, when you need the bag, you just squeeze the clip on the connecting strap and pull the bag off of the hook/loop backing piece.

I used some stainless steel screws that I had from some antenna projects. I had read in other postings that the screws that come with the kit are subject to breaking.

Sorry for the slightly out of focus pics.

X2

Plus if you were in the military recently and came away with some extra pouches, you can always use them and attach them to the tail gate cover, OH console or seat cover!!!

Does this conflict with the soft top being folded down and a rear seat in the vehicle of a 2dr?

There I am 2 weeks ago with the Smittybilt cover in one hand, a drill in the other - looking at my 7 day old Jeep wondering why I would intentionally put holes in something so new.
Then I drilled away.

It's a Jeep.

Are the bags and cover just Loop and Hook to attack the bag to the cover?

My hubby kept asking me if I was sure I wanted to do this. I kept saying yes. Then after the third one, he asked me again....

The 2 bags that come with the Tailgate Cover are MOLLE type bags. The larger bag has 4 full length straps on the back. The smaller bag has 5 straps and the Smittybilt bag has 2. These straps weave in and out through all the belt straps on the Tailgate Cover then snap onto the bag to secure it all. You can see the belt loops on the below pic:

I'm hitting this thread a few months after last post, but figured it was a good place to ask.....

I just installed the tailgate cover today and I've already filled the bags up. (of course).

Anyway, I really want another large(er) bag to attach and see some of you saying you found them online "all over the place". Can you point me to any particular sites? I've tried looking around and I'm not having any luck. My google-fu sucks today I gues.

thanks

This looks black on my screen. I got tan as well and it came with self tapping screws.
