Tailgate weight capacity 200 lbs??

I know that this topic has been hashed around a lot, but I heard something this morning that made me want to ask if others have heard this also.....

I was talking with the 4 wheel specialist that is re-gearing and lifting my Jeep '10 Rubicon and asked about my options for hanging a heavy spare tire, (35 inch Toyo Open Country MT), on the tailgate of my Jeep.

He said that the Jeep tailgate is designed to carry up to 200 lbs. of weight and that I will be fine with the 35 inch spare tire as long as it is well secured and mounted tightly.

I have tried to find information about the weight capacity of the tailgate but have not been able to find any published specs.

I believe what he is saying but I wonder where he got the 200 lb. capacity number for the tailgate.

Im not sure where he got the number but I have seen, and know of, a number of people with 35"s on the back.

I grounded my CB radio's antenna on the metal plate that I used to mount it onto the lift gate (bad idea? oh well!), and the drill wasn't getting through the metal plate. So I had to stand on it and put my entire body weight onto the drill. I weigh roughly 180lbs, so that on top of the tire (32' BFG M/T) seemed fine.

But that doesn't mean it's still not recommended to load more than 200lbs. Kind of like towing capacitys. Haha.

You have to take into account for jarring / bumping with that as well - I too have seen 35's on the gate - with better bump stops and secured extremely tight - but you most likely can Bo and Luke Duke it over the subdivision speed humps any more - LOL

200lbs? Not even close. Don't you guys ever refer to you owner's manual?

NOTE:
If you have added aftermarket accessories to the
spare tire mounted carrier, it cannot exceed a gross
weight of 50 lbs (23 kg) including the weight of the spare

tire.

^^^^ This. It might be able to stand it for short periods of time occasionally, but to have a big ol' spare hanging there all the dang time, the hinges will be very unhappy after a while. Kinda like packing around a bowling ball, it's cool to pick it up and throw it down the lane, but if you had it tied around your neck 24/7 you'd get tired of it real darned quick...

I have my Hankook BIG 33' on my '08 JKU tailgate, but

Although the weight of wheel/tire is 78 lbs, I have Daystar extended bumpstops and the tailgate hinges are "HOLDING", I don't know for how long

Mine's been on about 6 months and you need, AT LEAST, extended bumpstops to minimize the vibration--which starts to degrade the hinge welds !!

Don't doit for looks and plan on adding bumpstops "LATER"---BAM-you lose !!

Gotta be done the first time you mount the spare and I wouldn't attemp 35" tires/wheels, now you're crowding 90/100 lbs--too much for that stock carrier !!

Good luck
