Tailgate won't open

I've got an '08 Jeep Wrangler RHD. This morning it did not want to latch when I shut it. I moved the latch a few times with my hand and then it did latch. I locked the tailgate as usual and as soon as I locked it I thought "I probably should not have done that". Later in the day I go to unlock and open it and it is not working.(this lock has been weird a few times in the past- doesn't seem to want to unlock/unlock sometimes) I managed to finish the work day and have spent most of this afternoon trying to get the thing open with no success. I've tried the other key, and it sounds and feels like it is unlocking. I think the button in the handle is broken. It does not have the same resistance as the door buttons.

Does anyone out there know how I can get the tailgate open? My husband crawled back there and tried to open it from the inside but had no luck. I can't work without this vehicle and I can't work if I can't load from the back. Help please...

Mail lady, huh? Sorry to hear of this problem. After looking at mine, I'm thinking, have hubby crawl in the back and pop off the vent that is near the handle, maybe he can activate the latch from there.(?) Then I'd lube the latch severely....once it's open, check to see if the thumb button is working or not....it's the only thing that I can think of to help you...good luck.

BTW, one of our members has installed an inside emergency latch, so I'm pretty sure you can activate it from inside the tailgate....

Thank you- we'll go try that right now before it gets dark.
I agree- I think the thumb button is broken somehow.

krutj- you were RIGHT!!!!!! The latch mechanism was stopped about half way and that's why there was little resistance in the thumb latch. A pull down on it and it opened right up! The spring under it is rusty so I suspect that was the problem. I've sprayed lithum grease on every moving part of that thing that I can get to...and then sprayed it all again.

THANK YOU!!!!!

SOOO glad it worked out!!! The mail lady is in business!

Every Jeep I've ever owned has had dampness issues at the tailgate...
We were on vacation in Florida once, when the wife's Grand Cherokee tailgate would not open....that was a real pain, but nearly the same problem.....

Your hubby is a fast worker.....better keep him around..

There's no writeup and the release attachs to the cylinder of the latch pawl

Sometimes my TG is a little hard to open also, because of the extra weight of the bigger spare/wheel and if you lift the gate at the same time as you press the button---it helps-

Good luck

Nice!!!
I was going to say your steering wheel is on the wrong side, but that obviously isnt the problem.

My jeeps in Nevada and I'm not and I doubt that my little camera could take a good pic in that shaded area !
