Tank regurgitating during fueling

Hello all,
Ive noticed within that last few months that while fueling my jeep, by the time the nozzle shuts off the fuel my tank spits back on average a quart that spills over and runs down my rig. Now I wanted to know is it just something that jeeps do,or could it be fuel bladder. This happens even if I slow fuel(1st notch on pump) If someone could shed some light on these strange events I would greatly appreciate it.

A lot of JK's do it. They shouldn't. If you have an 07 or 08 you're covered under a Technical Service Bulletin and you're given a lifetime warranty. Later models it will probably cost you. The problem is the fuel fill tube. The one on my 10 was replaced with an updated part and it hasn't spit out since. There are a lot of threads on this if you want to do a search.

Its not the fuel fill tube, but the tank vent, which is an integral part of the jk's tank and not replaceable individually like other models. The dealer will replace ur tank under warranty if ur still covered. Otherwise, u will need to purchase a new tank and replace it urself.
Mine was done about 2 years ago for same reason.

It is the fuel fill tube. A few years ago the tanks were replaced but they don't just replace the tank now. The fuel fill tube was re-designed and that is what's replaced under the 2013 TSB.

I don't know if it was tank or tube but my 2010 Rubi started doing it bad and I had the dealer replace the tank and whatever else was needed. Mine was just out of warranty but the Jeep rep fixed it for $ 100. I am still bugged about the $ 100. This is clearly a factory defect.

My 10 Rubi also did it after approx. 3 yrs. The dealer replaced the fill tube and didn't charge me. It was done as "good will". They could have charged me because the TSB only covers 07 & 08. It seems like they charged you for labor. The part is close to $300. I agree the TSB should be extended but they obviously disagree.

Is it certain that people out of the TSB will be charged a repair fee??

Seems crazy that the same issue affecting cars produced months later than those part of the recall are forced to pay

Just took my 07 JKU to a local dealer last week and got the check valve replaced. I didn't buy it there but they just asked for my VIN # and a couple minutes later scheduled my repair. It was at the dealer for about 3 hours and that was it.

Is anyone having this issue with 14's or has this been addressed in current models?

I didn't have to pay as I said, but I've done a lot of business with the dealer over the years. If it's not covered by the TSB they can charge for the repair. If it was a recall there would be no charge. However, it's a TSB which isn't a recall with this issue.

Update

I called the local dealer here in my area, read him my Vin# and he told me that he would schedule me an appointment for this friday and it would take about three hours. He confirmed that this recall had been extended and it would be free of charge.

My 2014 Wrangler does it at times. I just monitor it carefully when I re-fuel. Sometimes it cuts off automatically, sometimes not. I thought it was strange but didn't give it much thought.

It seems like with the majority of JK's even if there isn't a problem you can get a spill if the pump nozzle isn't on a slow setting. Or, at some stations it's the nozzle that's actually the problem. Run the nozzle on the slow or medium setting at the most and see if that works.

Well. If we are getting technical here...
The fill tube on a 07/08 does not have a vent check valve. They have an integrated check valve in the fuel tank that cannot be replaced/fixed once it starts to stick. It looks like they designed a quicker fix than a complete fuel tank replacement because it was such a common issue. The fix appears to be a new style fill tube that has the updated 13+ vent that can be changed much easier and quicker, like almost every other year wrangler.
Sounds like a great idea.
Thanks for posting this SB, as it will def help many member on here.

Just bought an 09 Jk and first fill it spit up...took to the dealer and they replaced the filler tube, filled up and it was still spitting up fuel....they replaced the tank also and it's now fixed...The issue is not the filler tube, it's the valve in the tank that is faulty and gets stuck open thus causing the spitting fuel...figured I would post and let you guys know the fix if its still happening to you...

Here's a thread for TJ's but it may apply to JK's because it is the exact same problem.

Take it to a Jeep dealer. This is a bad deal and very dangerous. Mine got to the point where I was quite concerned about the amount of fuel on the ground as a fire hazard to all.

Worse case they charge you something but you don't want to mess with this.

Yeah I'm going to
It scared the crap out of me the first time I filled up
I've had it for a month now and I've figured out how to minimize it but I can't prevent it
I'll take it to one this sat
If anything I did get a 3rd party warranty so theoretically that should cover it, right?

Sorry, I am not sure of that but I would certainly press hard to have Jeep cover it first then the warranty since this is a known issue. If I were you I would print out this thread and take it with you.
