TechAuthority Service Manual - Worth it?

Just curious, has anyone invested in the $135 service manual for your JK? I just bought a 2014 JKUR and was thinking the service manual would be an essential purchase.

It appears to come on a CD, but only the 2013 revision is currently available. I am wondering if any of you have purchased this CD, and if you are happy with the contents. I plan to do much of the routine maintenance myself, and am even interested in tackling moderate repairs as they come up on a case-by-case basis.

Thanks for your input!

I've got the factory CD service manual and feel it's well worth the price, even though by the time it gets to your door, you will spend a bit more. With shipping, handling, and tax, the price will go up 25%.

It's presented by vehicle group such as steering, brakes, front suspension, rear suspension, differential and driveline... really everything about your vehicle including transfer case, transmission, clutch, body, heating and AC, electrics and wiring. There are hundreds of diagrams and the info you need to remove and replace everything, and what special tools may be required to complete the job.

I actually found a hard copy set on craigslist locally for $50. Referenced it a bunch already.

For you guys that have the 2013 one, how is the wiring info? I noticed in the description it said the traditional wiring diagrams were not included, which kinda concerned me as they have been invaluable on stuff I had before.

You can also buy a subscription to alldata for one vehicle only. It's the site garages use to get their repair info. I use it daily as a (ex) mechanic myself, when advising technical repair issues at work. It's complete with all wiring diagrams, tsb's updated as they come out, flow charts etc. About as deep as it gets.

Excellent info, thank you for everyone who has posted! gecko4, how much does such a subscription run?

Also, is the content on the TechAuthority CD just a giant PDF? Seems like there should be an alternative way to obtain that. I'd be down to split the price with someone when the '14 revision is released...

I'd prefer a hard copy. If it's anything like the shop manual I have for my Ford it is worth its weight in gold once the warranty is up if you do your own repair work. It will paid for itself many times over if you hold onto vehicles as long as I do.

Here in Canada it's about 60 bucks. Probably half that for you guys in the States, lol.

Would the subscription work on a MAC computer? The tech authority cd is only available for windows, so I would have to find a paper copy or use the subscription service. Any info helps.. I haven't been able to find any others manuals at all.

Partition your mac hardrive and throw windows on it. Best of both worlds.

If its just needed for what he described than yeah thats a better idea. I have to use windows all too often for work programs and using it natively with bootcamp is just easier.

Not to steal the thread, but...

I need Win for work stuff frequently too, always go VM, more choice in what to use and portable between devices....

Now, back to your regularly scheduled thread.....

A paper copy would be preferred in any case--throw it in the JK when wheeling and hope you can accomplish the fix with a BFH and bailing wire ha!
