Ahh yes the 3.21s...gotta love em especially when you want to go to a bigger tire. I didn't think about that. I agree 15s look a little too small on JKUs but I have seen them where it looked ok. Ben's (TanManRubi) one with the 33s on his 16 procomps look very good and very symmetrical. The size of both the tire and wheel look good on his 4 door.

But then again . . . (The Official " Show me your JK on 15 inch Wheels " thread)

I wonder if these Black Rock D-Windows fit . . . .

I was looking on the 15" wheels what fits and what doesn't pic and the Widows are not mentioned. Can you find out the offset and backspacing of them? The MBs that I have are 15x8 with 3.75 backspacing and -19mm offset. I don't know for sure but if they make them the same, its possible they could fit.

Also if it does fit, you'll have about 15-20 different sets of 33" tires to go with on those ranging 32.5-33

I just PMed DTD about the Black Rocks. If they don't know, I'll need to do some legwork to see if I can find out if the numbers are precisely the same. Even still, isn't it sort of crapshoot? If the MB72s had an extra beadline around the interior they basically wouldn't fit, right? Even though the numbers would all stay the same?

But not all as lightweight as your DuraTracs. If TireRack's website is accurate, the Kumho KL71s for example are 60 lbs in 285/75/16 and 57 lbs in 33x12.5x15. Pretty similar.

By contrast, the DuraTracs are some of the only ones I've seen lose TEN POUNDS going from 285/75/16 (32.8x11.2x16) to 33x12.5x15. It's crazy.

I know and trust me, I feel your pain. I went through the tire/wheel circus a few times

The thing to remember about the similarities between the weight of the tires you mentioned above for 16" vs 15" wheels is that even though the tire may be close in weight for both, your still getting less weight from a 15" wheel vs the 16" regardless of the tire.

Every pound counts.

Looks good

Good luck with the track bars install, you will be surprised at how easy it is. Key is to do it on flat level ground and torque th bolts to 125 foot lbs.

Have you done this? Thanks for the encouragement. I've been a bit nervous about it but I'm thinking I can do it properly. I guess my concern is how to measure accurately and get both axles lined up to be 100% lateral. Any tips?

Yup did it in my drive way. Measure from the chassis to the outer edge of the tire, making sure measure from the same spots on both sides. the longer of the 2 lengths is divided by half and that is how much you have to go the other way. Use a ratchet strap, one end attached to the chassis and one to the diff to pull the diff. Once even on both sides, tighten and torque to 125 fps. Good luck, you'll be surprised at how simple.

Its not really the pounds that get you when going from 15 to a 16. It's the un-sprung weight aka rotation mass. This is what makes or breaks MPG and performance. Example is on drag cars we ran 15' rim, sometimes a 14' if we could safely do it. Then run a 165 front tire This was to make the rotation mass less as possible while also having less rotational friction.

Example
15" weight is 15 pounds
16" weight is 12 pounds.

Tire weight = same

The 15's will perform better as its less rotating mass (surface area/volume).

The black rocks from what I've been told and see works. The offset is going to be 19mm for any 3.75 BS that is a 8 inch rim.

and here's why

Well boys, DTD just confirmed the fit and also explained the almost etheral lightness of the 33x12.5x15 Duratrac versus the 16" size:

Yes the weights are pretty accurate. The 33x12.50R15 is a "C" rated (6 ply rated) tire and the 285/75R16 is an "E" rated (10ply rated) tire.

Generally speaking, the heavier the ply the heavier the tire.

Might be convinced on those Black Rocks . . .

For real. It'd weigh less than the stock tire set up, have less "rotational mass" (thanks DJ ), and be more than an inch taller and two and a half inches wider. Crazy.

That's quite a combo. Is it going on a 2 or 4 door?

Do it but be prepared for your new JK. You will admire it with un known amounts of love and respect each time you come out to see it or when parking it in public.

Track bars went on Saturday and it's a noticeable improvement. The steering is tighter and the Jeep seems to track better driving in a straight line. I don't have as much as loose feeling like before but I still have a small vibration from time to time on the interstate at higher speeds. This is mostly noticeable when getting up to speed on the highway but once there it seems to go away. Axles did get centered both front and rear, looks better now.

Update.

Notice some vibration in the steering wheel shortly after installing lift and rotating tires. Was small and mostly when accelerating but seemed to be getting worse. Like a small shake in the wheel from left to right and the gear shift (manual) would move from left to right while driving sometimes too. Took it to have all tires balanced. Three tires were out of spec and needed to returned to zero. Drives MUCH better now and the steering wheel does not vibrate.

Good to know. Thankfully I'm getting new wheels and tires at the same time, so everything should be in balance. Had to change my choice of wheels. Called Pro Comp and they advised the wheels I want won't be made until at least the 1st week of Feb 2012, meanwhile, all my parts are collecting dust at my local 4WheelParts store. Changed to the Mickey Thompson Classic II's in black. They'll be here end of next week!
