I've got a quote from one company for $600 shipped. And 2 others wanting to price match.

If it comes down to it, I'd rather work with the company that gave me the best quote to begin with if no one else will go lower.

I love mine. One of the best mods you can do if you don't want a bumper/carrier combo.

Think of it this way. If you have both the Hinge and the Carrier, imagine installing just the hinge and carrier - with NO TAILGATE. Just 2 bolts holding the carrier onto the hinge. That alone would support the wheel. Now add the tailgate to the hinge and you can see what TF is getting at. The Hinge carries the load. The tailgate is now just affixed to the hinge.

The carrier is stout. The hinge is stout x 10. Together they eliminate any concern for the tailgate. Then you adjust the slider to snug up the wheel right up onto the hinge. The 3 studs that mount on the carrier are no joke either. Solid combo.

You might double check the owner's manual, but if I remember right, it is rated at 75 lbs.

I just took my 35 off the stock carrier, moving to this setup. It was on there for about a year with a few trail trips and the carrier was still intact, but I felt it was just a matter of time.

The stock carrier is actually ok with 35s on alloy rims, the problem is that the tailgate is NOT. Thats what the teraflex hd hinge actually fixes. I use the hd hinge with the stock carrier and have had no issues or concerns.

yes you read it right the stock tire carrier is underrated for the STOCK rubi spare (70LBS ish)

An Engineer from Jeep said on this very forum (somewhere) that the stock carrier is rated to carry the heaviest Factory tire and rim combo ... PLUS 35 occasional pounds for the Mopar bicycle rack. And not an ounce more.

I believe he mention in the post that number being something like 95 pounds with the safe full time value being around 65 pounds. And that the likely damage from exceeding that would be to the tailgate, not the actual carrier. And this is why the stock carrier works ok with the Teraflex HD hinge for 35's.

No matter how you read it though, it is pretty funny that it's total stock limit is so low considering tires are about the first thing most jeep owners will step up.

Boy, this is not a cheap hobby. $500 to hold the 5th tire on the more than likely >$1500 35" tire set you just bought. Ouch!
I may have to get my lift and go roller skate for awhile...

factory jeep engineers don't post on internet forums and if they did they would not let it be known they were actual factory engineers. It's the internet so there is always people purporting to be someone they are not lol.

I've had my HD hinge and adjustable carrier for a few months now. Love the setup. The only concern I had was having the steel hinge rust. I've seen pics of a few rusting from road salt. That concerns me since I live in the rust belt , where the roads sly is applied LIBERALLY in the winter.

I painted the mounting portion of the hinge with black rustoleum as insurance.

When you advise them the rubi spare weighs more then that they will tell you yes jeep engineering recommends fifty pounds. Not meaning to redirect but I called thinking the manual meant fifty pounds plus the spare and was told no it is fifty pounds.

Right, but understand that the folks working the call center have to give you the minimums for liability reasons.

I don't doubt they said that - but at the same time I don't doubt even for a moment that the discussion I was reading was a genuine bonafide response from the guy who designed the thing.

I have a Dick Cepek FCII 35 inch tire on a 16x8 procomp alloy hanging back there on the Teraflex HD hinge and the stock carrier. No lie, I haven't weighed the stock rim/tire or the aftermarket... But here is whats going on at the back of my jeep...

Its just fine.

And that leads me to believe that the engineer in the QA was speaking straight. And I would never expect some pinhead in a call center to know more than the guy who designed the part.

This is what I run and love the TF hinge but the stock spare mount has me nervious. it feels like it is made of pot metal. My wheel and tire are 82lbs. I did just get back from doing about 500 trail miles in moab and it was still on when on got home lol.

I agree, it feels like funk.. but as long as its not betraying me, its no more cheesy than any of the other cheesy crap on my Chrysler/Jeep. What about your little dana axle up front? I worry about my D30 a lot more than I worry about my tire carrier.

I definitely would worry about my D30 if I were running 35" or bigger for sure or if I abused it with even stock tires. I agree Chrysler does make a pile of sh!t and after buying a new Durango several years ago I swore I would never own another Chrysler product but succumbed to my desire to get a wrangler. I knew better but kind of like passing by a bad accident, you know you should not look but you can not help it or like seeing an expired date on a carton of milk and smelling it anyway even tho you know it is going to be spoiled.

Aw, thats unnecessarily harsh.. Its ok for the wranger to be under engineered because we are all going to rip them apart and fix them. They know it.

No point in designing it awesome, we are going to break it down like so many legos and do it right.

Wrangler is just a truck you buy the kit for, where it goes, thats completely personal.. They give you a solid frame to bolt crap to... They give you a mini-van engine. You do the rest.

I had the factory 18" Saraha 7-spokers and Duellers for stock wheels. Even those I think weighed 74 lbs - way over the 50lb limit. So when going to my new wheelset that weighs right about 82 lbs, I wanted the carrier. Plus with the 4.5" BS on the wheels it stuck way out with the stock carrier. Now I have zero worries.

I have both pieces and its really stout....Like some have said, that tire adjustment is really important...needs to be sucked up tight against that rubber bumper...(PITA) but talk about solid....I'm more nutz about the 3rd brake light going through the wheel....
