TeraFlex Inc., manufacturer of TeraFlex suspensions, body protection equipment, low range gearing and HD axles, introduces the newest heavy duty component for the JK Wrangler.

The TeraFlex Heavy Duty Adjustable Tire Carrier & Tailgate Reinforcement Kit is designed to carry up to a 37" tire over the most extreme trails and obstacles, and provide easy and immediate access to the rear cargo area with a single action.

The TeraFlex Heavy Duty Adjustable Tire Carrier & Tailgate Reinforcement Kit spreads the load and weight of the tire to more than just one hinge point. Incorporating and using the factory tailgate hinge mounting points spread and separate the load as far apart as possible, resulting in maximum strength and durability.

Dedicated tooling provides a cast A356.2 T6 Aluminum main component. This keeps the carrier as light, and strong as possible. The fit and finish is designed to follow the flow and contour of the Jeep tub, while seamlessly providing additional mounting points for off road accessories such as recovery jack and fluid containers. The factory Jeep tub provides substantial internal gussets and bracing that easily supports the new tire carrier and oversized tire. The HD hinge brackets are forged steel and the HD 5/8” hinge pins are constructed from cold formed high-carbon hardened steel. The combination of mounting location and HD mounting brackets provides one of the strongest, rattle-free tire carriers on the market today. The TeraFlex HD tire carrier removes all stress from the gate by utilizing the HD reinforcement carrier as the load-carrying component, in effect it carries the weight of the tailgate assembly and the spare tire.

Product Features & Benefits:
• Lightweight aluminum
• Maintains single one-handed entry to the Jeep cargo area
• Allows adjustment for up to 37" tire
• Threaded mounting holes for mounting accessories (fuel cans, recovery jack, etc.)
• Eliminates tailgate stress and rattles
• Simplicity and Ease of installation - installation can be performed using common hand tools.
• No drilling required.
• Factory form fitting geometry and finish. CAD-designed tooling follows the precise compound curvature of the Jeep body, resulting in a carrier with an OEM appearance.
• No aftermarket bumper purchase required – works with OE and aftermarket bumpers.

Rotopax Mounted Without the Jack

Here is the accessory mount without the jack with the two gallon Rotopax container. The tailgate is opened all the way in pic 2 and 3, the Rotopax lock comes close to the taillight but passes just outside.

I know this is likely common sense but I thought I'd post it anyway to provoke a thought about it. Wife just went grocery shopping. The bag boy (man) loaded the back and then shut the tailgate with the window still open. The jack doesn't clear the glass. My wife said it made an awful noise and upon inspection nothing appears to be broken. Just a little red paint on the glass. Not sure how many times you could to that an still not have the glass break so not something I'd want to try again.

Here is the jack touching the glass with the tailgate still a few inches from fully shut.

I have a question, if the high lift gets caught up on let's say a large overhead branch, if the branch didn't break, what would happen to the jack mount? Would it tear the hinges out? I live in the city with lots of low parking garages.

I chickened out on using the stock tire mount and the TF hinged carrier as there was just too much vibration from the stock mount and my 35" tires.
I stopped by Teraflex and picked up the adjustable mount for peace of mind.
Easy install but was glad i watched the youtube videos.
Hardest part was cutting off the brake light cleanly.
The tire doesn't vibrate at all now when closind the gate or driving down the road.

Can you explain how you determined there was vibration from the spare driving down the road? I'm still using the stock mount with the HD hinge and it seems pretty tight and solid, but I've debated whether to go ahead and install the TF mount.

Did you replace the tailgate bump stop when you were using the stock mount? My spare does stick out another couple of inches with the lower wheel backspacing on the stock mount, but I'm using the Daystar bump stop and my wheel/tire seems to be mounted pretty solid. I haven't noticed any vibration, but I may not know what to look for.

Ok, so can someone smarter than me explain how the weight is taken off the tailgate? I thought since its bolted on the tailgate that the weight would be more evenly distributed. Maybe I am confusing the adjustable tire carrier with the HD hinge? Thanks

I think it's a bit naive to think a company is going to respond to every demand made on an internet forum. If it concerns you so greatly, have you contacted them directly? I'm no Teraflex fanboy, the HD hinge is the only TF product installed on my Jeep, but I would be surprised to see them respond to a possible product liability issue on WF. Who knows, there may be an ongoing investigation, and they are prevented by lawyers from commenting. If you aren't aware, product liability issues are big business for attorneys.

IIRC, the picture making the rounds on the internet forums wasn't even posted by the owner of the Jeep. I'd want to know more about the installation, the off-road conditions, and the actions of the driver before I jump to any conclusions. At least I haven't seen that posted anywhere. Teraflex must have sold thousands of these hinges and mounts and a picture of one problem floating around the interweb doesn't cause me concern. If there starts to be multiple examples of failure, then maybe I'll be concerned.

Agreed, I think it was originally posted projectJK FB page (maybe eddie oh of jk-forum fame, not sure). TF responded to that picture by saying it was an isolated case and they have a warranty on it. What else do you want? They're not gonna recall it. I remember there were a few cases of broken dana axles due to improper welding or weakened steel. You don't see them recalling everything. :hide:

Not sure why u guys all ask questions on here everyday wanting a response from the manufacturer, but when something is asked that may be controversial you :hide: doesn't matter who posted the pic, a break is a break. I believe teraflex will respond, but they haven't had a chance. I posted the question yesterday and all the fanboys think I'm crazy for asking it:facepalm: if they feel it was an isolated incident than fine. All I'm looking for is that, THEIR position on what occurred and if they feel some of us should add some extra support or safety precautions. Don't know who is a asking for a recall:crazy: some of you fanboys need to relax and let teraflex speak for themselves. I don't think they feel this is as big a deal as some of you popping up to defend it do.

So I saw the teraflex response in another thread. Basically blamed it on the customer while most members did the same. He was lying about a 37" tire, must of been a 40", must of been prerunning or jumping whoops, didn't happen just driving a dirt trail, wasn't a flaw or defect, installed wrong, etc. got it. I see where they stand.....at least they replaced it.

yeah both of your guys setup's look good. :D i just completely removed my third brake light.. guess that's why i'm kicking this around to begin with. it's been gone for about a year now... but i wouldn't mind putting it back on there.

part of me would like to just run that brake light as a tail lamp, you are required to have a light on your license plate... then i could move the plate and with the three lights... and my big arse tire sticking out -- it's sort of hard to miss me at night. :thumb:

I could us some advice as I am nearly finished with the install of the HD Hinge and the adjustable carrier. Everything went well but I'm unclear on how to set the tire (final step).

Is the right side of my tire supposed to rest on the HD hinge?
Thanks!
