Teraflex JK HD Hinged Tire Carrier Installed

I installed the Teraflex JK HD Hinged Tire Carrier today with the stock tire mount. Might get the TF one soon, but we'll see. Took about 1 hour 15 minutes. Pretty simple install. It's fantastic. The tailgate feels really solid now. It used to feel flimsy and like it was going to twist every time I opened and closed it. It also shook a bit when I would shut it. Now it's super solid and closes and opens really nicely.

One note, it asks you put spaces between the tailgate and bumper, using wooden blocks. I didn't have any. So I cut up the hard foam that came with it and used that. Worked perfectly. See pic 2 below.

Here are some pics:

More pics. The last one shows the install of the spacer on the left side to make the stock carrier level. Comes with the kit.

Looks good. I think this is a good alternative to a larger heavier bumper/tire carrier.

Thanks!

ESP - the shipping weight of the hinge is 26 lbs. So it's relatively light compared to a new bumper, but still heavy enough to be sturdy.

ndrugby - thanks for the write-up!

I like the concept of the product, but have a few questions… It looks like it uses the same holes as the stock hinges, correct? Is there any added support where the tire mount is located? It looks like only half of the tire mount would get any help from the extra support, correct? Can you tell why they didn’t extend the support for all of the bolts for the tire mount? It looks like the rubber bumpers for the tires won’t fit - at least on the passenger’s side, correct?

Yes it uses all the existing holes. They likely didn't extend it further due to the vent but not sure. Also, perhaps that creates some weakness to the piece itself. This piece seems to be there to support the hinge point more than anything else. And it does that job well. The added tire carrier probably adds a bit more support. The only tire bumper that fits is the driver side.

One half of the carrier sits on top of it. The other straight on the tailgate. But the entire carrier still uses the holes in the tailgate. I think their stronger tire carrier prevents issues with the tire carrier pulling on the tailgate mount points. I don't think this piece gives the tire carrier much more support than what it has now. Although maybe it prevents some movement.

I'm excited to see their tire carrier too. I may have to order that, but I'm waiting for now. Hope that helps.

Thanks. The problem with the stock setup is that the spot welds on the inside of the tailgate start to break/pop, and I was wondering if/how this new product would help fix the problem. It certainly beefs up the hinges!

There's a video from Bestop showing off their over sized tire carrier where they claim that the hinges on the JK can handle a significant amount of weight, but the carrier itself was the weak point. Hence, their solution leveraged the use of the hinges with a sturdier carrier that also provided more separation form the tail gate for larger tires.

Looking at this design, it does look like it takes a good amount of the carrier load and distributes it evenly along the back of the tailgate and onto the hinges (strong point). The beefing up of the hinges I think is just a byproduct of them making use of the existing bolts to lay their support system along the length of the tailgate. I would still worry about the stock carrier if the wheel and tire combo was more than stock + 50lbs.

Offroad Warehouse. Ordered it in May. Finally came this week. Looks like they've got their production running after the initial 25 came out.

Well said. Teraflex recommends just their tire carrier for 35s. But I plan to do both pieces. I never liked How easy it seemed the tailgate could twist.

Since this piece was available first I went ahead and did it. I think it's an improvement by itself. But I'll go with the full solution soon.

Also: if you look at the piece, there are some predrilled holes for attachments. I think they are for hi lift jack, cb antenna and rotopax attachments. That was another reason I liked it. I want to install a hi lift jack. Hope they come out with the attachment pieces soon.

I've been all over the websites of off road warehouse and teraflex but can't find this tailgate bracket. Do the just pull the part from the site when inventory is low?

No. They're in limited production. Call them to order one.

Teraflex hinged tire carrier with corner armor

Has anyone tried to install the Teraflex Hinged Carrier with any type of corner armor? I have PSC Crusher Corners that fit very tight to the stock hinges. The TF hinges seem a lot beefier and was wondering if I'll have to be doing some trimming of my corners to install the TF Carrier.

Correct. No new holes required to install the HD carrier.

Will this fit with corner armor, specifically RROR crusher corners?

I know that another user (JKashat) had to pull his aev corners to install it. I checked with another vendor who I am waiting on new corners from (tntcustoms) and they said that it would work with the new ones they were designing. I would check with River Raider.

Thank you, i'll check with RR. Might end up taking a grinder to them and just make it fit! It looks like it would take much.

I guess I'm getting old. $700 for this with the spare tire mount seems way overpriced to me.

I agree, you can almost get a bumper and tire carrier for that money
