I'm looking at going with 285/70 R 17s in either the Terra Grappler or Duratrac which one would be better all around? I don't off road so its 99.9% pavement princess lol. The Goodyear is LT 285/70 R17 while the Nitto is P 285/70 R 17 that has a SL rating so I'm thinking that will be the lighter tire. Thanks. I have the BFG AT KO'S on there now with 80,000 miles on them and still have about 10,000 on them to go. Good tire just very expensive compared to others.
Duratrac is highly touted and I have a set I run now. That said, I won't buy them again. It's not the 99.9% of the time on pavement, it's the 0.01% of the time you need them off road and they fail you due to tread or weak sidewalls.
Yea I know everyone at Discount I have talked to say Duratrac is the best tire you can put on a everday JKU but, they are pricey. I like the Nitto's and see alot of trucks running them just not so many Jeeps. I might end up with the Terra just for the price and it doesn't have that ugly white lettering as well as its a SL rated tire vs D/E that most others are in the 285 size.
I can only speak for the duratracs. But I love them!! I went with the 33/12.50r15's and lvl 8 trackers. After rebates it was cheaper to buy new tires and wheels than it would have been to get the 33x17" or just a few dollars more. The 33"x15 were $208 and the the wheels were $95. I think the 17's were $297(I think) for the 17's. (Not including rebates.)
I had the Terra's for about 30k miles and they are a good tire. The only weakness was snow/ice and wet pavement. I have since replaced them with the Duratecs and can say both are good tires. The Duratecs are a little better on slick pavement and seem to wear wear better, but are worse in the mud. You won't go wrong with either of them. If I was to choose between the two, it would be the less expensive.
I'm running the terra grappler in 285/70r17 now. They ride great and are quiet. They look better in person to me. I'm going with a more aggresive tire next time though. Cooper STT or ST max. The duratracs and the AT K/O's are great i'm sure but overpriced.
Yea I like the Terra's and you are right you need to see them in person. I might end up with the P 285/70/R17 vs the LT 285/70 R 17 so I get a better ride and lighter tire. You are killing me with the Auburn plate. Roll Tide! As long as its the SEC I can't complain though.
Terra grapplers suck on jeeps. I had a set before I changed over to DTs. Terra's are great for heavier pick up trucks. They have great road manners are mediocre offroad, I found them extremely scary on very wet roads.
Duratrac is a great all around tire. A bit more noisy on the pavement but otherwise good road handling. Offroad they rock. In packed dirt and sand they excel. Very good on snow and icy roads. Mud isn't DTs forte, on rocks, they perform surprisingly well. GY make most sizes with the option of an E load sidewall to remedy the problem of the C load sidewall blow outs on rocky terrain. You'll just need to run the PSI lower on the road for a more comfortable ride.
Terra Grapplers I'd rate a C.
Duratrac I'd rate as a B+.
I do plan to buy another set of DTs this winter.
Here's a pic of DTs on the rocks.
I run Terras on mine and have no real complaints. I purchased them over the Duratracs based on price since the reviews put them about equal (other than weight wise). With that said, my next set I will go with a more aggressive tire.
I would also be considering the Toyo open country MT's
