Test Drive Question

I've reached out to a few dealers about test driving a Rubi or Moab (particularly on the highway as this would be my DD) and they're understandably sensitive about putting piles on those.

What I don't get is that, no matter what kind of Wrangler I want to take for a spin -- new or used -- all the salespeople seem to be insisting on accompanying me for any test drive. Is that some sort of corporate policy?

I guess it makes sense to ensure drivers aren't offroading, but I've bought lots of cars and have never encountered this.

(And no, I'm not sketchy!)

Yes and they want to interview you while out. What do you do for a living, where do you work, do you own or rent. Also want to see if your serious about the purchase or if they are wasting their time. And most likely to ensure you don't off road the vehicle and break something.

During this time frame I usually keep them busy by quizzing them on the vehicle specs, options, etc. Keeps them off their game. Only met one salesrep that could answer all my questions. Turned out all he sold were JKs and had one of his own. We lucked out IMO.

Asked the guy what the differences are between the Moab and the Rubi? If he doesn't know, then tell them to get someone that does as you don't want your time wasted. Nothing worse than spending time with someone that doesn't know what a 4:1 transfer case is and the advantages it brings to off roading.

Sorry.... had Jeep purchasing flashbacks for a moment.

The ride alongs depend on the dealer. I havnt had a ride along in years, the subaru wrx I drove the guy went with me which was weird for a 27k car, where upon leaving the dealer he said you can beat on it its a wrx. My volvo was 46k and they let me take it for a while, about 45 minutes, I probably put 30 miles on it, just me and the wife and then took it out again before we bought it to make sure it was what we wanted. Our local dealer is really good. Go with them for a short drive and then when you get back to the dealer ask to take it out by yourself for a few minutes. If they wont go to the next dealer. If none of them let you, you will at least driven one for quite a few miles..lol If they all say no, maybe you are sketchy.

Many will let you take it home overnight for a test, be sure it will fit in the garage, see how it looks in the driveway, get you hook on it. I just ask and explain that I will need more time to be sure it is what I want and sure I want to spend $30 to $40K. Simply turn the question around on the sales person as if he were in the process of making a large purchase and was unsure of what will meet his/her needs.

Test drove a 2011 Wrangler a few years back sales man insisted on going along.....yes he "knew me" as I had been in a couple of times before (over a 2 or 3 years...had me in his computer) and he knew I had an '04 I wasnt selling and I kept looking at the new Jeeps to make up my mind if I wanted to drop the coin.

Wasn't until I wanted to buy the '12 JK that suddenly, "It was take it as long as you like". IDK why the change.

When we were looking for a vehicle to replace our older Buick to transport our parents, I gave him a call and he let me drive everything from a GC, a Town and Country mini van, and a Chrysler 300. Even after we were pretty much set on the 300 he offered a 200 and a Journey and a Challenger...but we stayed with the 300 and happy we did.

IMO it has to do with them being comfortable with you...sketchy or not.

I actually never knew you can test drive without a salesman next to you. I guess I am sketchy.

I always beat them out of the car by bringing my wife and two kids. I tell them it is important for us all to test it out.

If I cant bring the army, I will bring just one other person and spend the entire time talking about the great deals we have been offered by other dealers, or nit-picking everything about the car. I might LOVE what I am driving, but if the salesman is in the car, i gripe about every little rattle... It is all a mind game.

If testing a 2 door just take your spouse along. Make the salesperson sit in the back. If they still want to ride along, just keep asking to switch between and auto and manual, until they get tired of crawling in the back!

I test drove on two separate days (about 3days apart) back in January.

The first time we went I had the wife with me and they told us to take as much time as we wanted; the salesman just took me out to the Jeep and gave me the key and that was that.

The second time I went on my own and the sales guy took me out to the Jeep, handed me the key, and he was in the passenger seat before I even opened the driver side door.

Guess it all depends on who comes with you.

I recently took out an unlimited rubi, and no one came with me. When we got back to the dealer he just had a couple questions. There wasn't any pressure.

When I bought my Super Duty, the dealership wasn't in the best part of town, but the salesman gave me the keys and told me to have it back by 8:45 PM.

When I bought my JKU, the dealer was in a more 'upscale' area and the saleslady insisted on a preplanned route and talked incessantly about everything except the Jeep and the deal. I think she just wanted out of the office for a mental break.

Different dealers, different rules.

I am kind of an ass to salesmen. If they try to hop in the car/truck/jeep I am interested in I usually tell them I changed my mind and dont wanna waste no more of there time. Or I ask if they come with the car, if not then why do they need to go.

I always tell the salesman from the start that I test drive alone, sometimes they give me grief but usually they just hand me the keys. I am nice about it but firm. When a friend was looking for a car last summer, one salesman gave us the keys and didn't even ask for our license or proof of insurance. I had been at my Jeep deanship so much before I bought my JKUR in October that I would just give them the VIN and they would hand me a plate and the keys, we took many Jeeps out for test drives, on highways with no time limits.

I bought my 2012 JK from Garber Chrysler Jeep in Saginaw, Mich. The salesman didn't hesitate to let me take it home for the night. The next morning, I told him that made the difference in my decision to buy it.

Yep...Garber has great dealerships. Buy mine all from Shafer & Bierlein in Frankenmuth. Another top notch dealership that has never even questioned if they needed to go with me on a test drive. I ride alone for that..period.

I work for a dealership and our salesman must accompany any buyers on a test drive.

In my shopping the last month or two I've only had one dealer let me take the car out by myself. The others have wanted to go along.

The only annoying one was the one where they had a pre-defined course they wanted to use. The others have told me to take it wherever I wanted to.
