I have to say I borrowed a JKUR before making the decision to order the Jeep i got and it had the 430 NAV. One cool feature the 430 had was it would show you your MPH. I only assumed that getting the "upgraded" 730 that it would have that feature too. Like I said I probably need to hit the manual pretty hard incase that feature is in there and just need some tick mark somewhere. I did Lockpic mine day 1, but I read the folks that had LockPic their NAV would show 0 MPH.

The other gripe with my 730 is I think it does not know how dark / light it is outside. It seems to play the day brightness at night and plays the night brightness during the day.

If anyone has a quick answer to the two questions above great, if not i will RTFM and go away.

Anyhow, love my JKUR bone stocker...
Easy answer. There's a setting under "display", set it to 'auto'. If it already is, use the light adjustments for the dashboard. It adjust the display too.

If you want to manage your HDD library it's as easy as pie to get into THAT, but I can't seem to find an easy way to go into a HDD menu and choose an album or song to play!

-and the "trail of breadcrumbs" feature in the GPS- It's great, but WHERE does it store your saved trails? I can't seem to find them to review them on the map once they are saved!!

My bet is that if we were all together having a coulple of cold ones we'd each have information that would be usable to the other guys. It's just the way of things.
Sorry the system is pissing you off. It does seem...quirky.

I can make a video of these if you want. I've been tinkering with mine a lot.

To get to the HDD I usually use the right, "finger button" in the middle of the volume controls on the steering wheel. The other way is to hit the "Radio/Media" button: it will cycle or you can use the touch screen.

Yup, being a software engineer myself, I wish they would "Open Source" the software for the MyGIG. I would gladly make improvements in my free time.

It is quite puzzling. I was able to to everything mentioned on a trip up from Tillamook State Forest in Oregon. But here is Olympis WA I cannot get the same menu subset. I am stumped. We make trips down there petty regular, so next time, I will take pics and copy down the steps.

The missus thinks I am nuts, because her '11 w/430N shows the speed. And actually shows a speed limit sign on the screen if you go over it. She is telling me that I saw it on her rig. Thing is, her rig has never been to Tillamook.

Yes. Press the "Menu" button on the right side column of buttons. Then hit "My Files" button on the top left of the screen. Then select what type of file you want to delete (music, pictures, address book). Once you select a type of file, you will see a link to delete one or multiple files.

I suggest ripping your music to a computer you regularly backup. iTunes can rip ok, but for broad device compatibility change the rip options to MP3 and a bitrate of 224 or higher (for fidelity). then simply copy the music to a thumb drive and plug it into the head unit and press the copy button on the screen to transfer to the hard drive.

I heard a quote in regards to sailing once that very much applies to computers and digital data. One is none and two is one. Make backups of any data on a mobile device. If it is mobile, it will get lost, stolen, damaged, upgraded at some point and you need to be able to copy the data back to it in one of those scenarios. Not "if" but "when".

Actually it will stream from a USB drive. You need to select "Aux", then "Devices", then "USB" and you can play straight from the drive. You can also play music from USB or the HDD while copying music onto the HDD.

I suppose dialect will have an impact on voice recognition, but it works wonderfully for me. Have you gone through the voice training steps as outlined in the radio manual? If not, press the "Menu" button on the right side column of buttons and then touch "System Setup", then touch "Voice Recognition" and then "Start Voice Training".

I suggest doing it with the engine off and the windows rolled up in a quiet environment and speak in a normal tone as if you were talking to yourself since that is the way you will be speaking when issuing commands. It is recording your wave patterns for key phonetic sounds and will use these as a guide to interpret you in the future. This is why it is important that it can hear you clearly and in the same style as you would normally speak.

Shuffle was mentioned above. I discovered that it is not a true "shuffle".
I have 1,700+ songs ripped to the HHD so far. Every time I hit shuffle the 730 plays the same songs in the same order. What a radio!

The "FREE" Travel Ling quit again today. Sirius still works but all presets went back to the default intro station. What a radio!

TOMTHBOMB, what application version are you running on your 730N RHR? Apparently application version 2.12 is the latest.

I ran across these threads suggesting that version 2.12 had some bug fixes:

Thread 1: What version of Application Software did your RHR 730N come with? - JeepGarage.Org - We Are Jeep!

Thread 2: 730N RHR issues.....lets hear them... - Page 8 - JeepForum.com

Finally had a chance to play with the 730 a bit. While I'm not impressed it is better than some other units I've had. I do not like the fact that it is so difficult to get to a phone book dial and wish there was a scroll nob for selection. I also hate the fact that you can't input destinations while driving. I spoke to the salesman briefly about it on his followup call and his comment was "if you think the 730 is bad, try the 430".

On a separate note, what's the deal with the low fuel message? Not shit it's low, I want to know how many miles until empty the whole time. Is there a way to change this? It goes from showing 30 miles to empty eg, to "low fuel" on the evic. I filled up for the first time this morning to be on the cautious side in case there was an issue on the new vehicle and could only put in 16.5 gallons.

compared to my garmin nuvi or my zumo, the 730 sucks. i also used all the trip info, distance traveled, moving time, stopped time, average speed and lots of other crap offered on the garmin models. the 730 is a little lame compared to that....however, i do like the weather and stuff.....btw, the scale of 15 miles has a bar by it....or under it...that bar = 15 miles, not the screen. thats why you get hundreds of miles either way. same as when you zoom in...that bar = the distance just like the paper map bar scale like 1" = 1/2 mile. i do like some of the features but like you ran into problems a couple of times when it couldn't find the road or street i was looking for....normally was in the adjoining town/city. wish you could update it but i think we are bent over on that one.

Called Sirius, got it turned back on in 5 minutes.

Thanks for that. Hard to feel grateful and stupid at the same time but just did.

Doubt if I will pay for this when my free trial is over. I like Weather Bug on my Droid better but do like the 730's large screen.

Damn.... I deleted the music off the HDD as I simply copied it from my computer and burned it like you suggested. What a diffferance !!! Thanks a ton for the idea.

Me too. My observation is that each time music files are converted fidelity is lost. Going from CD to MP3 to another HDD that is a possibility. With my impaired hearing, Jeep acoustics and so so system I don't need that.

I actually find it easier to plug in an ipod/iPhone than to deal with the HDD stuff. It's a pain, and awfully slow. But, I was thinking about swaping the HDD they have in there for a faster Solid State Disk I have laying around. I wonder if they have a hard drive scheme I can't use. Something I'll have to research.

Hi

I wonder how to get the best audio quality. In my very cheap Car stereo that I have in my Suzuki Jimny I feed it with flacs, FLAC (Free Lossless Audio Codec) file size is reduced without any information being lost. I even feed my home stereo with flac for optimal sound quality.

I find it strange that this very expensive 730 can not take FLAC.

MP3 is forbidden on my home stereo

I have to deal with it when I get my wrangler 2012 with the 735N.

But I think the stereo in the Wrangler is not high fidelity anyway so so highest bitrate of MP3 will probably be good.

But still wondering how to get optimal sound quality.

Play the CD?

Copy a CD to the HDD,
from manual "When copying CD Audio to HDD, audio files
are converted from CD Audio to WMA,

But WMA compresses audio data and cause loss of audio fidelity

Wondering how much WMA (quality) is compressed when a CD is copied to the HDD, compared to convert the CD in the computer to WMA (best setting)?

It might be better to rip the CD in the computer to the best settings of WMA and then to copy it to the HDD with a USB flash drive.

Or it might be better to rip the CD in the computer to the best settings of MP3 and then to copy it to the HDD with a USB flash drive.

But if I play the CD direct it plays the original sound that is not compressed, no loss of quality.

The are a another format, WMA WMA Lossless, compresses audio data without loss of audio fidelity but If I understand the manual right it do not support it.

Why have a big HDD on 40GB there I can not store the original CD quality and only compressed format with less sound quality.

It would also be nice to have the

"album, song title, genre and artist information" on each song.

As I understand it as some wrote "I use Windows Media to copy music to a thumb drive" I will get the ""album, song title, genre and artist information" on each song"?

While I am waiting for my Wrangler I want to prepare the music optimal

Best regards from Sweden

Thank you for asking this question. I would like for someone with more knowledge about this (wait, I just saw a drunk stumbling down the street, he qualifies) than I to answer this.

I believe the voice command is "Setup Phone Pairing" and then follow the prompts -- Page 105 in the Owner's Manual.

Hi

The manual states:

"Hard Disk Drive Mode (HDD)
The HDD mode gives you access to the audio files on the
internal hard disk drive. It functions similar to a CD

player, with the exception that the internal HDD can hold
more tracks. It can hold approximately 3,000 four-minute

CD-quality songs.

I dont think it is CD-quality

Help me with the math.

1GB is 1000MB

Jeep say "40GB HDD (20GB available)"

So we have 20GB of space and a original CD song at four minute is about 50MB big, that is in GB about 0.05GB.

So how many original CD songs at 0.05GB can we fit in the 20GB available hard drive?

20GB/0.05GB= about 400 orginal CD songs

But how can Jeep then say "It can hold approximately 3,000 four-minute
CD-quality songs." ?

The say CD-quality songs, but the have to be compressed to fit 3000 songs and then it is not CD quality anymore, unless they use WMA Lossless that compress without any quality lost.

3000 songs on 20GB harddrive is about 6.7MB (normal size for MP3 song) each and the original CD song was about 50MB? and that give us a compression ratio at almost 10:1 and I do not think that WMA Lossless can compress that much.

Wikipedia about WMA Lossless

"The typical compression ratio for music varies between 1.7:1 and 3:1"

In the manual the say

"NOTE: When copying CD Audio to HDD, audio files
are converted from CD Audio to WMA"

The do not say WMA Lossless.

So in my world it can not give CD-quality songs when converted to WMA in the HDD as it compresses audio data with loss of audio fidelity.

So maybe the best sound comes when a CD is played direct.

Anyway as the stereo and speakers aint no super high fidelity and the noisy compartment I think it will be good with best quality level of mp3 or WMA.

Hi

If any one have the 730N and the time, test the audio quality for us.

Maybe four guys in the wrangler that judge the audio quality on a original CD with for instance good band like ABBA as I am from Sweden

1: Play the orginal CD in 730 direct

2: Copy the CD to the HDD in the 730

3: Rip the CD in the computer to the best setting of mp3 and copy that to the HDD in the 730

4: Rip the CD in the computer to the best setting of WMA and copy that to the HDD in the 730

What option sounds best? Details, clarity, bass, tremble etc

Best regards from Sweden
