"Chrysler also plans to add the eight-speed transmissions on the Jeep Wrangler" .... Anyone seen info on impacts to offroad performance?

"It replaces everything, literally,” said Brian Harlow, vice president of powertrain of the company’s plans to offer the nine-speed transmission in front-wheel drive vehicles. “Everything that we are making today will get it.

Chrysler also plans to add the eight-speed transmissions on the Jeep Wrangler, Ram, Jeep Grand Cherokee, and Dodge Challenger. The nine-speed transmissions will be featured by the Chrysler 200.

Without reading the article right now, 8 speed would be the auto?

I'm sure this will result in better fuel economy and maybe a nicer and quieter cruising speed. I'm curious about the off-road performance in 4Lo, as well as any added weight and reliability.

Yes....
However...the question is....does the 8 speed tranny mean a dial on the dash (like the Ram)? I'm not a fan of that....

bit confusing, but from what i understand they are only beginning the production of the trans by the end of 2012. so it wouldn't be in a wrangler until half way through 13 or the 14 models?

Good stuff for the people that get the autos; doesn't affect me.

What an odd time to buy a Wrangler....

Between 2007 and 2010 MY, how many changes were made? Basically none..

But between 2011 and 2014 we are talking about a major interior change in 2011, a major engine and tranny change in 2012, a minor interior change in 2013, and maybe a(nother) major tranny change in 2014.

And how long until the JK is refreshed?

The JK2 or whatever will be out in 2014-16

Yea it's all about fuel economy, but like you my concern is how will it hold up offroad. Not clear if this will hit me on an early '13 model though. Weird times for sure.

Hmm.... the "9-speed" sounds suspiciously like a CVT with 9 distinct "setpoints".

The more I read about the new changes the happier I am that I bought a 2010. It's been rock solid so far and the bugs were likely ironed out.

Comparing the ratios of the 5-speed...

Mercedes-Benz 5G-Tronic transmission - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

...with that of the 8 speed...

ZF 8HP transmission - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

...I suspect it would do quit well off road AND be better on the highway.

But, who wants to be the first in line to buy an unproven, possibly bug-laden, new transmission that first year it's out?

It's funny because a bunch of people bought an unproven, possibly bug-laden, new transmission that first year it was out AND an unproven, possibly bug-laden, new engine (modified for wrangler) that first year it was out in 2012.

Also, i would LOVE a 10 speed manual! A 5 speed stick with a high/low pull-switch on the stick.

Well, if they do a new transfer case with 2hi and 2 lo then it would be pretty much this

not really the same. you'd traverse the first 5 gears in low, then pull the lever into high and go back into 1st for for 6th and then 2nd for 7th etc. the transfer box isn't design for that. you can't even shift in and out of low above 3mph

I'd love to see an 8 speed married with a modern 4 cylinder engine in the Wrangler 2-door. Maybe one of the Fiat motors coming with the Dodge Dart. I could live with 160 hp if the tranny could keep it in the sweet spot and still have moderate highway rpm and good gas mileage.

Kinda crazy that jeep is abandoning the "coveted" 12 idea so soon. Hate to have purchased one with a better trans coming out now

The ZF transmissions have been in the works(known) for yrs, in other words the Nag1(Mercedes) has been on it's way out for a while.

There will always be something better/newer/prettier. The 2012/2013s are very capable. I don't think anyone is complaining about the power available on-highway or off-road with the current 5-speed. Personally I'd love an 8-speed and a factory Hemi, but I'm not waiting around indefinitely to order a new Jeep until they happen. Mostly because some other totally awesome thing will be rumored to be right around the corner, and I'll be trying to DD a lifted 2007 with no a/c while wearing a suit and tie for the rest of my life.

They're just bringing back the Torqueflite pushbutton transmission. Instead of the old "R, N, D, 1, 2", it's going to be "R, N, D, 1, 2,...8, 2WD, 4HI, N, 4LO". Really not so complicated. That's, let's see...only 15 buttons or so. You just gotta love Chrysler. It will probably be the same "give the engineers AND the accountants what they want" business model, where they come out with super cool engineering advances that break before you can use them.
