Test drove an Arctic today. White, manual. It mostly exceeded my expectations. I really like the seat material - the vinyl/cloth. It looks like it will hold up well. The black sticker on the hood actually didn't bother me as much in person, not sure why. The white accents on the dash did still bother me - I like the way they look, but as someone else pointed out, I think they are gonna get grimey pretty easily.

Other than that, the suspension felt tighter and more responsive than on the regular Sahara - guess that's mostly the difference between the two (Rubi vs. Sahara). The Sahara is tuned a little softer to be more comfy on the road, while the Rubi is tighter, quicker reacting.

All-in-all, though, I really like it; even the Yeti decals. He and I have similar hair.

Arctic addition has been added as a selection to the "build your own" on jeep.com.

First impressions of the Arctic

My first impressions of the Arctic after driving it home from the dealership:
- The winter chill color is plain awesome.
- The black wheels don't look cheap, visually they compensate for the painted roof & fenders.
- The black hood decal is matte, at least it does not look like a sticker from an office supply store. Does not add to or remove from the overall appearance.
- The white inserts look way better than on photos. The one on the steering wheel has a rubberish feel to it, I'm afraid that they painted over a different color plastic & it will wear off in spots. Time will tell...
- Seat fabric is interesting, gives me the worries. Just by touching it, sharp objects are an absolute no-no. Black leather would have been more durable.
- The Jeep logo on the front slush mat is painted winter chill alike light blue. Or it's just white and I imagined it, have to double check on this one.
- Initially I thought that forcing me to pay for the $400 connectivity group was a total rip-off. Driving home listening to my phone without the static of the FM transmitter I used in my previous car was uplifting.
- USB port in the compartment under the lockable armrest: nice touch, one can leave a phone in the car to get it charged even with the roof off. Plus the port is lit, don't have to search in the dark.
- Auto mirror adjust: in a Wrangler? Wow. Wish if the symbols around the adjusting knob were lit up also, so I could have figured which one is it on the way home (it was dark). Now I know, so no biggie anymore.
- Kids love the footprints. I like them. Wife said they should have added a big Arctic logo with coordinates instead of the footprints.
- I don't get the freedom top, why is it split? To fit in the trunk? Wish they had an aftermarket one piece front insert, with sunroof in it.
- The new V6: obviously way better than the old 3.8. Although it's rated at 285 HP, don't expect to outrun anyone. My previous car was officially around 255 HP, my daughter (now it's hers) will race me off with it anytime.
- I like the feeling of sitting in the "high chair" again. Missed the feeling from the minivan days.
- Test drove a regular Sahara, the Arctic with the off-road tires is a bouncier ride. Did not give me the feeling that it's okay to let the steering wheel go. I guess Jeeps were not meant for going straight.
- Did not drive on highway yet, just in the city the ride was nice & quiet.

Consensus: What appears to be a brute designed by a machinist and put together by a backyard mechanic is actually a fairly sophisticated machine.

Did I mention that the driver's door has to be slammed in order to lock right?

Nice review........

Good point about the Freedom top....never really thought about it. A one piece with a sun roof would be awesome.

So....it IS vinyl instead of leather?

It is not leather for sure. Unless it came from a genetically engineered checker patterned cow that smells like vinyl records once skinned. The whole car smells a bit like a shoe store, it's hard to distinguish which fume (aka new car smell) is being released from which plastic part. Hope you forgive me but I will not cut it thru just to get an all revealing section view . My kids might do that, eventually. It has a rubbery feel to it. I can try to take a close up shot tomorrow, my phone is not the best though. About the rest: the new promo shots on the auto media sites are very well representing the winter chill color... at least on a cloudy day, can't report on how it plays out during a sunny day yet.

Got the Arctic tonight

I snagged her an hour or so off of the delivery truck. Unfortunately, it's dark so I can't post some good pics. She's sitting in the garage as the kids sleep. I know there are lots of opinions on the color and package, but for me and my 6 & 7 year old boys, it's perfect. And one day this will be their jeep to work on and I think they'll get a kick out of the yeti stuff and the memories. We're in AZ so I can't wait to explore!

On these points:

- I had a different impression of the fabric. I though it felt rugged, like it would hold up well.

- The Pentastar: Agree, it's no race car, but when you give it gas, it definitely responds.

- The ride: It's the Rubi suspension that gives it a bouncier ride more so than the tires. It is tuned more for off-road use so it's very tight and responsive. The regular Sahara has suspension more tune for ton-road use.

- On my test drive, we had the front half of the Freedom Top off on the Interstate and I was still able to talk to the salesman without having to yell. That was surprising to me.

Thanks for your review - great insight!

I know you guys can't Waite to jack these beauties up and put some nice big wheels and tires onum like they deserve. I am willing to pay $750 dollars per five tire set with tpm intact. Must have less then 100 miles onum, and I will ship or pick them up.

Great pics, GXB! See that crossing pattern on the seats - it kinda reminds me of rip-stop fabric in outdoor clothing - maybe that's why they look rugged to me. Guess only time will tell.

Please, keep posting pics. Honestly, I can't get enough of looking at that Wrangler and for now, I'm living vicariously through you as I was just informed by the wife that I would not be purchasing a new vehicle until after we hardscape the backyard .

It is hard to take photos to show the winter chill color. It appears way brighter on sunny photos, in shade the photos show it darker. Instead of posting a bunch of misleading pictures, I have to maintain that the new promo pictures are the best way to get a feel for the winter chill color. Google image search: Jeep Arctic USA

First Roadtrip...

The winter chill color looks different in different lighting, it's just one of those colors. But I like that about it!

I got to check out an arctic model, but sadly it was not winter chill. I thought the interior looked great. I didn't realize the orange stitching went around everything, armrests and the steering wheel, etc. The vinyl on the seats looked a little crinkly. They should have put some felt padding under it.

I liked the look of the wheels in person as well. I still wouldn't choose them because I will ride in sand, and not mud or snow.
The engine is definitely better than the 2011 in terms of acceleration, but this has as much to do with the transmission.

I havn't seen any without a nav yet. That seems to be the dealers' favorite option, probably because it is all profit. I gave away a garmin because I use my phone for nav. They are selling on black friday for $49, and the cheap ones don't get locked out when you are moving. So figure 5K-6K mark up, depending on which nav.

The dealer yelled at me for picking at the black decal. I just wanted to see if I could get a fingernail under it. The guy was making fun of me for wanting "baby blue".

Love my Arctic! It has officially become my prized possession! Just ordered my first mod: a 13" euro-antenna from Antenna-X. Thinking about a front bunker next. Need to get a soft top, though.

Got my artic chill yeti this weekend and was disappointed with getting only 16 mph for highway driving. How did they ever get 20 mph hwy?
Other wise i live this edition and think the black and red accents look incredible on this color.
