It must be a jeep thing because I get so many bugs on the windshield.
Same route I don't get any on my car.
I know it's because of the angle on windshield but it drives me crazy.
Next time you wash it, after getting all of the bug residue off try treating the windshield with a few coats of Rain X following the directions on the container- makes getting them off so much easier.
I drive 25 miles one way at 5am Mon thru Thursday through Carolina country with corn, tobacco, soy beans etc. The bugs are out in force and it looks like going through a snow storm at times. I would rather hit bugs than deer although the bugs have damaged the grill paint pretty good. I have about 15 chips in the paint after 2 years.
I do have a bug shield and I think it helps keep the bugs off the lower half of the windshield. No scientific proof other than my personal opinion.
I would come UNGLUED if one of those things landed on me, UGGHH. Lord be with me if I were driving with the tops off and it flew in the Jeep let alone on me. My husband picked one off our Japanese Maple the other day and threw it so it would fly. Thank God I didn't see it when I walked by. If I have to, which is rare, smash a crunchy bug, I scream so I can't hear it. We have some huge beetles here in NC too, just nasty.
It only gets bad when one crawls inside my shirt. Still worth it, though, to have a 5lb+ trout hit a two inch long fly.
Hopper season is the worst, and it is likely to be especially miserable here as we haven't had rain this month. Salmon flies are only a problem near rivers, while I'll have hoppers hitting the windshield for 50 miles.
I'm on a Va to Ca road trip/move and we are only half way and Ive already used all my windshield wiper fluid. Just picked up some Prestone "Bug Fluid" and Ill let y'all know how it works out.
If you can find a bug deflector (not a hood protector), they actually work great. I have a leftover that I put on my Jeep for the bug season and the only place I see bugs is on the upper windshield frame or on the upper windshield, but very few.
They screw onto the braces under the hood, so they can be taken off after bug season and leave no visible mounting scars.
We recently drove from Colorado to Illinois. I had to stop twice in the day we crossed Kansas to clean the windshield because it was getting so thickly covered it was distracting. Each stop took three passes over the windshield to get it clean.
Same here on our Colorado trip. Crazy bugs. Those gas station squeegees work great. Also the orange Rain X windshield fluid at Walmart will put a coating and prevent bug splatter. Finally used all the factory fluid from when I bought it.. a year and a half ago
I'm 2,200 miles in to a road trip right now. I've depleted two gallons of bug wash. If you don't start wiping the bug in a couple of seconds, it dries like concrete on your windshield. The Jeep kills everything. There's no glancing blows on that windshield.
While traveling, the best time to clean the bug off areas of the jeep would be early morning while the cool air and dew has collected on the surface of your windshield and front grille. Always carry a microfiber towel and the B&T in a small travel bottle.
If you wash every week it is easier to get your window clean.
I simply use a rag with vinegar and water. Takes some elbow grease.
In additional I use - I think it is made by Pinnacle - an additive that I put in my normal window wash. It is made to beef up your normal wash and get the road tar and grease off.
Every so often I use a really good cleaner that is somewhat abrasive and then coat the window with a window hardener product. Found them both on Autogeek site.
Autogeek is great as it is run by detail professionals.
So my windows stay relatively clean considering it is basically a bug catcher.
It happened! As I started my 3 and 1/2 hour drive back from the beach I pulled the lever for wiper fluid and two little drops made it to the windshield, I literally yelled "noooo"! :nonono:ullinghair:: Not one more drop left of wiper fluid, out, gone, zero, do not pass go. Had to make a pit stop 1/2 way and cleaned the windshield, what a buggy mess! I just put in the bug windshield fluid so can see how that works now.
I'm in MS. I have to wash the windshield off frequently just so I can see. Came home two hours after riding Saturday morning on some backroads just to wash the windshield. Hitting it with wiper fluid and a few swipes of the wipers just makes it completely opaque.
Just be happy you are hitting bugs and not rocks....
