Think I'm pushing the towing cap?

I've browsed some other posts about tow capacity and boats and I would like some advice on my situation. I have a 20' pontoon boat that I store 15km from my cottage. I am usually able to get a truck to tow it but this time I can't andI am only there for a short time. The ride would be through a small town so under 50km and then 10k on a county road posted at 80km but would keep it at 60km. I have pulled it from the cottage to the lauch ( about 4K) and launched it with no problems.

I don't know the weight but I have been looking on legends website and comparable sized boats are around 1750lb. Mine is 10 years old and does not have the bells and whistles that the new ones have so I think it is a little less. Have a 60hp merc 4 stroke that comes in around 260 pounds. Gas tank is empty and about 50bls of gear on the boat. So we are around 2060lb (if my boat is that heavy)

I have a 2010 2dr mountain rated for 2000lb with 3.73 on the rear. I don't doubt that I can pull it but would being 100lb or maybe 2-300lbs over be a problem stopping at the speeds I have mentioned and would towing it cause a damage? Breaks are good. Here's a pic of the jeep with boat. Would have the cover on it.

Towing is not the issue; stopping under controlled conditions is where your problem will be. Check to see if you have electric or surge brakes on trailer; either of these will help. Just rest assured that towing the pontoon; sooner or later you will have to change diapers when the boat turns you around. Ask me how I know.

I tow my mini stock dirt track car on a tandem axle flatbed trailer w/o issues. But I understand & know how to pull a vehicle & I realize I have a lot of weight behind me. So I always leave extra space in front of me & always know whats around me. But trailer brakes is a very good thing to help though.

Thanks for the info. No brakes on the trailer so stopping was my concern. I'm pushing the cap weight and I was hoping that low speed would be ok.

60 pounds over isn't that bad to break. If you stay at 5 under the limit I can't see a problem. For more ease just tow it very early in the morning when no one is out on the road.

Your tongue weight doesn't look too bad on the rear end too so that's good

you will more than likely have some pucker factor for the first few bumps as the weight of the boat pushes around the Jeep. Go slow, leave lots of extra stopping distance and just be overly cautious, you will be fine.

engineers leave a margin of error so you will be fine. that said, i dont like to impinge on the engineering buffer if i can help it.

I doubt you are 2000lbs total. Those single axle pontoon trailers with the 10 inch wheels usually have Dexter or Reliable 2000 lb axles on them. If it were more than 2000 it would be tandem with 2-2000lb axles. It would be nice to have brakes, but they don't make them that way. Just give yourself a little extra room following etc and you will be fine.

Does that number include the weight of the trailer? I have 3.21 gears with the six speed and I tow a double wave runner trailer with one 3 person wave runner on it and have no issues. It weighs around 1500#. I have towed it from Missouri to Michigan before with no issues, mileage does suffer and in the hilly areas I have to downshift. The worst part is that it is wider than the jeep, other than that I wouldn't even know it was there. The one thing I can see is that you will get pushed around by the wind a lot more with the pontoon boat, but as long as you take it easy I think you should be fine.

^^ smooth... Not a single issue... Of course, everything with caution... I got a seadoo jetski this past winter... I cant wait to pull it with my Jeep... I know... I know... Jetski is way smaller than our boat... But, i'll be glad to post vid/pic in this forum after take it to the lake...!!!

You've got the same breaks as a 4 door with a 3500lb rating. Obviously, if it exceed the weight (not sure you will be) you're taking a bit if a risk, but at 30-35 mph, you should t have an issue, and probably won't even really know you're towing it. I had towed a 1500 dry weight boat with the 3.21 and the 3.8, and had no issues (granted I've been towing stuff all my life). Give yourself extra space to stop, and exaggerate all vehicle inputs

You have to take your time... Extra space to stop is the key... No hard stop at all, otherwise your boat will push you... Just because i pull our boat it means you can...

+1 about to check the kind of brakes you have in that trailer... It will give you confidence at the moment to travel.... Oh! And dont forget to check your Jeep brake pads as well... Poor break pads is never good... :-(

Yeah, the trip from Missouri to Michigan was my first time towing it with the jeep so I was a bit nervous how it would do. I was surprised how stable it was. Just took our time and made sure to leave plenty of stopping distance, but it handled very well. Wish I had lower gearing for backing it up my drive way. It's a Yamaha fx ho. Jet ski's are a lot of fun. Does your jeep tow that boat well? Have fun with the jet ski btw

Ride to the lake was nice and smooth... I was a little scare about it after all the research i did in this forum and the rest of the net... I heard good and bad things... With a lot of urban "legend" stories... But to be honest... There is not better experience after you try by yourself...

And don't get me wrong guys... Good and even bad advices are always welcome... But... Thank God i decided to do it... At the end, i must say im GLAD i did it... Otherwise i probably still wonder "what if".....

And yeah... I cant definitely wait to ride my Seadoo GTX...!!! Got everything ready to hit the lake in hot days...!!!

The only thing I don't see mentioned is mirrors, most States and all Provinces require towing mirror(s).

Almost all of them say you need a "free and unobstructed view of the highway 200ft behind you. As long as your boat isn't totally filling your side mirrors, those are sufficient. A pontoon boat might fill it tho so it's worth a look

I tow a 17ft pontoon with my jk sahara no trailer brakes (trailers with gvw under 3000 usually don't have them) just extra caution I never have a problem

I have a 7X14 cargo trailer that I converted in a camper that was pushing the limited at around 1950. I towed it 600 miles over the WV mountains when I went to the Bantam Jeep Festival and had no issues at all.

Don't have a good towing pic but the black trailer in the background is the trailer at the campground

I have a tandem axel flat bet car hauler that weighs 1600 pounds, it had 6 foot tall chainlink panels all the way around, I used it for garbage storage that sat out in the rain, I finally topped it off with garbage and had to get it to the dump. I actually was waiting to borrow someones truck, but finally I just hooked the 08 JK to it and tugged it out of the parking spot, up a slight hill to the front of my house, I did it with ease. So I decided to go for it and take it about ten miles to the dump on nothing but back country roads......it towed like a champ!
The wieght ticket was 4300 pounds (that sure cost me dome dough to dump) so at a combined weight it was at 6000 pounds!. was I nervous? yep sure was. would I tow that much wieght again? Yep but only in a pinch. I even have electric brakes on the trailer but they werent hooped up, I however took it real easy, didnt go above 35 MPH.
Do I have experience towing stuff? yep sure do.....I spent 4 years towing heavy munitions (bombs, bullets, missiles) to flightlines in the Air Force.....I STILL ALIVE!!!!!
I dont suggest you pull that much weight with your JK but it will be able to pull it in a pinch if need be. This little Jeep just chugged right along with out any struggling at all, no grinding,squeaking, jerking, or smells.
I was going to get rid of my car hauler after I move to Vegas from Georgia but now I think I am going to keep it, I know once I get the electric brakes hooked up, I can confidently put around 2000 pounds on that trailer and it should do just fine on that JK

i pulled my new Seadoo GTX today with my Jeep... can't wait lake Ontario get warm enough to take my Seadoo for a ride... of course, pulling it with my beautiful Jeep..!!!!

I tow my 20' pontoon boat short distances and my JK tows and stops it no problem, the boat is around 2000 lbs. I have also tried towing my 19' aluminum boat which is around 3500lbs around my neighborhood to see how it pulls and stops, it does pretty well, the trailer has brakes, but it has too much tongue weight for the JK so I use my truck.

Hate to be a stick in the mud, but I must point out a seemingly obvious but all too frequently overlooked point:

The is a TREMENDOUS difference between "can" and "should"

The Wrangler CAN tow far more than it is rated to tow. But pulling, stopping, and steering are each seperate issues. the engine and transmission can handle a lot...but the short wheel base, really decreases weight on the front wheels when you have any tongue weight at all.

My point is....Everybody wants braggin rights...especially auto manufacturers. If they could claim that their product could possibly pull one pound more than their competition..they will find a way to make the claim.

If, however, they put a low limit on something...there is a pretty good chance that some slide-rule jocky has probably done more homework on it than we have.

The question isnt: Can I do it?
The question is: What will it cost me if I am wrong.

If you say you cant tow it..and you are wrong...no biggie.
If you say you can to it...and you are wrong...the very least of your worries would be a citation. worse case scenario...you could find yourself explaining your engineering rationale to a jury.

Is it worth it?

What are the specs on your jeep? 2 door? What gears?

The JK tow ratings are very low compared to any other SUV out there. If you stay within the ratings there are no safety or liability issues.
