Thinking about an Extended Warranty on my 2010

I have about 14K miles on my 2010 and was wondering is anyone bought a extended warranty from Jeep after the fact and about how much it is/was?

Tough question. I would not get anything that's not dealer backed like mine was.
Most will tell you it's a total scam. I do agree but I got it anyhow.
They added it To my purchase price so it wasn't all that bad paying it throughout the loan term.
Find out if you can transfer it to the next buyer if you sell. I would think it would be a good bargaining chip.
most importantly, mine is totally refundable if I do not use it. They wanted to charge me $2000 and I got them down to $1500.
READ THE SMALL PRINT.
Oh ya... And there is a deductible for like $100 a claim.

It's sup to you

WELL worth it in my opinion.

I had $12,000 in repairs done to on my 02 Grand Cherokee through the extended warranty (including things you wouldn't fix if you had to pay out of pocket, like very minor seepage from the rear main seal, etc). It allows you to keep your vehicle in perfect condition for a very small investment.

I also bought lifetime coverage for my 11 Grand and now my 12 Wrangler.

Here are a couple of things I've learned:

ONLY buy the genuine Chrysler factory extended warranty. It's honored at every US/Canadian/Mexican Chrysler dealership. I never had a problem getting repairs authorized (the dealer does all the paperwork), and they must use OEM parts. I've had repairs done in Canada while on vacation. Aftermarket warranties are a crapshoot.

The best prices for the warranties are on line. Where you buy it makes no difference, it's the same warranty and coverage if you buy from your dealer or a different one. Search google for "Chrysler Warranties". The first link is the company that I've used to buy mine. They are a Jeep dealership in Wisconson who sells the warranties as a side business.

Go through the process of getting a quote, make sure you put in your email address. Within a day or so, if you haven't purchased it, you'll get a coupon emailed for another $180 off.

I think Lifetime Max Care (the highest level of coverage, basically bumper to bumper except for asthetic things like trim and fabric) is about $2000. If you're not going to keep it forever the 7 year plans are cheaper and transferable (the lifetime is not transferable).

It's not a scam at all. In fact, I'm amazed that Chrysler even offers this for Jeeps, given that they are pretty high maintainance vehicles. They must count on most people not bothering with repairs or ditching the vehicle before major repairs are necessary.

Oh, and with the Chrysler warranty, it's not a $100 deductible per claim, but per visit, regardless of how many repairs you have done.

The only "catch" is this. You need an inspection every 5 years to keep coverage going, and, if any SINGLE repair costs more than the Kelly Blue Book RETAIL value of the vehicle, they will pay you the retail value of the Jeep and void the warranty. So, lets say 12 years down the line you need a new engine @ $6000, but KBB values your jeep at $5500, they'll "buy you out" with $5500 and end the warranty.

You can buy the lifetime warranty anytime before the original factory warranty runs out correct? I'd like to eventually add it but right now don't want to add another $2K to the price of the new vehicle.

Yes, but, at 12,000 miles the price goes up another $100+whatever the latest price increase on the warranty.

My dealer wanted $4200(!) for the warranty on the Wrangler, until I pulled out my printouts from the site I referenced above. He offered to match, but there was no sales tax(9% here) if I bought online, so that's what I did.

If you're getting financing through Chrysler the portion of the loan covering the warranty is 0% interest, FYI.

Thanks that very helpful.

I forgot to mention I think it's a good idea to get the $180 4year/48,000 "Customer convienience upgrade" add on. You get wheel and tire coverage (non prorated replacements for damage - so a tire or wheel with 40,000 miles that gets damaged is replaced with a new one, no deductable). I inevitably bang up my wheels so it's been well worth it.

The other things I forgot to mention was that the extended warranty includes Roadside assistance, free towing, trip interruption (they'll pay for a hotel room) and a rental car if repairs take more than 1 day. If you get the "convienience upgrade", you get a "first day" rental car as soon as you bring it in.

Can you still get "Lifetime Max Care"? I thought that had changed - I wonder if, as a Canadian, I can buy the US warranty online?

There's a long thread about extended warranties for Jeeps on the Jeepgarage forums.

The short version is, sorry to say, none of the Chrysler lifetime warranties are available for vehicles registered in Canada.

The US lifetime warranties are valid in Canada though. I had an exhaust manifold replaced at a dealer in Nova Scotia.
