Thinking of a trade...

I was at a dealership today with the girlfriend she was looking at the 2011 liberty limited and ended up getting it. Also asked the salesman about trading my sahara 07 JKU for the 2011 with the condition of my payments stay the, and he said that there is a possibility that it can. Should I do the trade If it the same payments? Is there any worries about the 2011 wranglers have that I should be worried bout ? Any suggestions and info will be highly appreciate. Thank u

A 2011 will be great.

However, please don't negotiate based off of your monthly payments. Given a long enough term, you could finance a Rolls Royce without changing your payments--you'd just be making those payments for a few decades and would pay tens upon tens of thousands more than you would for the Jeep.

While it's good for you to know how much you can afford per month, the salesman doesn't need to. The 2011s aren't going away anytime soon. Spend a few days on Edmunds.com researching how to buy a car.

Understood, this wouldn't be my first car I will be buying and this is something I just want an opinion of course if the terms of the trade are too crazy I will not do it, but if everything looks good I really wouldn't mind getting the 2011 wrangler. I was just wondering if other people would do the trade. Would u ?

I would recommend selling your current Sahara your self. You'll obviously get a lot more for it than the dealer will allow as a trade-in. Then don't forget about the special discount available at Tread Lightly.

Its not that much different. Get yours paid off and keep it. Paid for is a lot better. Buy them in cash and don't make the bank rich but your self.

I am a proud owner of a 2011 Rubi and love the thing, first Jeep in 25 yrs and the last one was a 1948,,,,so yes it is an up-grade!

If you are wanting to trade your Sahara for a 2011 Sahara then cant see much of an advantage, if wanting to trade to a Rubi and you have not modded your Sahara to be even more off road doable then a stock Rubi then maybe. With the research I have done there's not enough difference in a stock 09 Sahara to a stock 11 Sahara, fair cost involved just to have the same but brand new.

With that said if the Rubi is on your mind you can up-grade your 09 to be more equipped then the stock Rubi with the money you may lose in the trade deal, just my 2 cents.

Again I am happier then a Deer in the woods with my 2011 Rubi

Thank you ailment the information. Im looking into the sahara with a lot of the new features added to it not stock. It's not a done deal that I will be doing this but it's an option to consider and have a dealer work a little to interest my curiosity. Just wanted to see what everyone out there had to say about the idea.

Generally, you're better off negotiating a price on the new car before you talk about a trade-in.

Sure, it's easy to keep your monthly payments the same -- they'll just screw you on the trade, give you less than its worth, resell it and make the money back that way.

If you're really interested, you should at least get your car appraised for free at CarMax to see how much they'll give you. Ideally you'd try to sell it privately if you're not in a hurry, but CarMax is generally a good middle ground. They offered me double what the dealership offered me for my trade, and when the dealership wouldn't match the price I bought the Jeep with no trade in, and the next day I sold my car to CarMax.

jeff is very correct, if you can get what your jeep is worth and a good price on the new jeep along with payments you can make then id be on it like hair on a ape.. Its all about what you have to pay to boot!! im sure you already know that though.

Another thought that some folks have alluded to is that the principal difference between a 2007 and a 2011 is the interior.

There's of course some other details (body-color hardtop available for the Sahara, bigger soft top rear window, Jeep detailing on the windshield, etc.) but it's still a JK with the same engine, transmission, and major parts.

A 2007 is a pretty new vehicle, and you may be close to "paying it off." Are you sure you want to reset the clock for a new interior?? The 2012s will at least have a new engine, which, along with presumably keeping the new interior, will be a significant change.

If it were me--and it's not, but hey, you asked--I'd hold my 2007 until about 2013 or 2014 to let the new engine settle in and trade up at that point. Just my two cents.

I would keep the '07. The only major difference is the interior. If you get a 2011, then you will be sucking up the depreciation again. I saw someplace that the first year is when that happens and that most vehicles depreciate 15-20% then 8-10% per year for 1-3 years after that. Pay off what you have, then put money into mods and make it just like you want it.

I test drove a 2011 and it has some neat little tricks like the tray for the hard top bolts but nothing that I would be willing to extend my payments another 3 years for.

I can't do that to my girlfriend her first new car lol. And for me I just got the car haven't been paying it for long less than a year I didn't get it new and got it for a steal. I don't think I'll be loosing on the trade. And I really like all the features the new ones have and plus the two tops for cheaper than a after market one doesn't Hurt either. If the number dont work in my favor than it a no go. I'll let you guys know what happens

Make no mistake -- you will certainly lose money on the trade. Most likely, it will come in the form of adding several years to your existing finance term, plus interest accrued over that additional term.

I don't know how much you still owe on your '07. But KBB lists a used car dealer trade-in value (assuming 45k miles) of just about $19k.

Cars.com lists the invoice price of a 2011 Sahara Unlimited with auto trans. and dual top (based on your previous comment) and no other packages at $31,200. You'll also need to pay tax on that, which we'll assume is somewhere in the neighborhood of $1900. But let's say you REALLY lucked out on the price and got it for $31,000 tax inclusive.

So with a really good deal on the new car and a really good trade-in value on your old one, you'll be losing $12k plus what you currently owe on your '07 (because that '07 trade money went to reducing the '11 to $12k, not to paying off your existing loan), plus interest over the new finance term to get that better interior.

Of course, those numbers are just estimates. But the basic formula is sound. If you do manage to walk away with the same payments as before, you'll probably be making them for much, much longer. And that whole time you'll be accruing additional interest, which is just money out the window for you.

I won't even get into the fact that if you do go through with this, you will likely be making payments for a couple of years after the expiration of your '11 powertrain warranty.

Very tire u make a good point there. This is why I will just talk and crunch the numbers and if they don't work out the way I want them to work out I'm still happy with my 07 wit 26k on it still a new car. It's my curiosity that I want to know how the trade works and if it's worth it or not. But all the info is great I might be going on Thursday to pick up the girls car and than talk to the salesperson to see what he says.

Imagine if you just saved your money and dropped in like $8k worth of mods to your 2007 . . . you'd still come out ahead financially and your 2007 would be a beast.

That said, don't let any of us talk you out of what's right for you. If a 2011 works for you, then do it man. Post pics and we'll all be excited to see your new Jeep. By contrast, if you decide to drop some $$ into your 2007 instead, post pics and we'll all be excited for that too.

Dual tops are not less expensive than aftermarket..... The way it is written on the sticker makes it appear that way, but the actual #'s are still Mopar prices. I forget exactly how the stickers read, but it boils down to you are paying for a soft top and the additional hard top is the price of the soft top+ the dollar amount added for the hard top... (eh, it makes sense in my head... )

I'm gladly to say that I am not doing a trade instead I'm doing pro comp 7069 16x8 and 315/75/16 duratracs and the new teraflex leveling kit for now. Spring is rock sliders and front bumper and a few lightforce fog lights. :0)
