Tire & Wheel Help on stock JK

A buddy of mine has a 2008 JK and it is time for him to get new tires. He has the 18" options wheels on it now. He likes his 18's and wants to keep them. I mentioned he look into getting smaller wheels (15" or 16") and buying goodyear wrangler duratracs.

First, what do you think makes more sense, keep the original wheels, or buy new ones?

Second, what is the largest you can go with tires and not have to worry about rubbing? Keeping in mind the Jeep is a Daily Driver?

New ones. 15" alloys.

Absent wheel spacers or an unusually proportioned tire, the stock size is about it. Any wider and they'll rub on turns, and almost all taller tires are going to be wider.

285/75-16 tires on Procomp 16x8 wheels with 4.5" backspacing ---- that's what I did.
I got the tires for around $200 each and the wheels for $85 each; sold the OE 18" wheels to a friend for $200.

Duratracs are good but pricey these days. Kelly Safari TSR and Fierce Attitude are both made by Goodyear, almost exactly the same as the Duratrac, and always cost less.
The Cooper STT is my pick for that 33" tire though.

This tire on that wheel will only kiss the back fender on full stuff. No control arm rubbing.
Moving to the 16" wheel will save lots of money in the long run.

Need to define which tire, which size tire First. Everything else is predicated off the intended tire size....wheel, backspacing, offset, the use of spacers as opposed to new wheels, etc.

He likes the 18" rims that were an option that year, pretty much he is looking for a more agressive tire while still being comfortable as a daily driver. Also it is New England so we get all types of weather.

What would be a good argument for buying new smaller rims and tires as a package? Off the top of my head it should save money on tires in the long run, any other ideas?

Saves money (lots), airs-down better with increased sidewall, rides more comfortably, more tire options, looks more like a Jeep and less like a mall-crawlin' SUV...

Tires are cheaper but a big difference is weight. Smaller wheels with a better light weight tire provides less stress, better gas mileage, and less wear. JP Magazine did a huge article on this a few months back. People tend to worry about looks too much and not weight when it should be the other way around or at least a compromise between the two. It used to be when people hit the trails they would try and lighten the load but now many have forgot that simple realization. Weight harms your vehicle. And when you are adding armor and heavy bumpers there needs to be some weight cuts somewhere. Lastly, the stock wheels limited the tire size, not only from the choices available but from the backspacing.

Cooper SST 32 inch will run on stock rim with no rubbing no lift went that way when I got my JK they are noise as hell though keep it in mind! Sports come with 16 inch rims so tires cost more when you go to buy them! 17 inch is more common than 18 when buying tires and if you request the right offset no wheel spacers needed the budget lift IE coil spacers and 33 inch tires! 15inch Rims will rub on your calipers depending on the offset!! I run with 25mm offset 17 inch rims and 35 inch tires weight is 122 pounds per tire and yes I daily driver went to Nitto AT to lose road hum and the are still very aggressive of road! Happy Hunting!

Like Rics and Hilldweller indicated, there's no good reason to keep the 18" wheels unless he just likes the look.

Bigger tires will almost certainly require wheel spacers. Tires will generally be more expensive than comparably sized tires for smaller wheels. Tires on 18" wheels have less sidewall. There are fewer tires available for 18" wheels. Blah blah blah.

Almost forgot Hancock makes a pretty good MT that wears fairly well! In case you wonder 2 years equals 64000 miles of driving for me so tire wear is everything but I also trail quite a lot so they have to perform well on and off road!

I appreciate the advice and will pass it along.

He was thinking of doing a 2" lift and getting 33" tires on his stock rims (18") as he likes the way they look. is it possible to lift it 2" w/o having to change anything else. (aside from the speedo change due to larger tires?)

33s on stock 18s no workie; they'll rub the control arms. He needs new wheels or spacers.
Spacers are illegal in many states now ---- many tire chains won't install tires on vehicles with spacers.

2" if lift is great for 33s though. But, if you're going to that trouble, why not get real wheels with proper backspacing?

I have 18's with 285/65 Nitto Terra Grapplers . I like the look of the tire and they ride smoothly. Only light off roading so far and they have been more than adaquete for that.

Good to know. Any recomendations for aftermarket wheels to get with 33" tires if he goes with the 2" lift, as well as any ideas for staying stock height and putting larger tires with smaller wheels?

There are lots of decent wheels and you have to be like a hawk on the interwebs to find them at a good price.
Shop for a 16x8, 5 on 5 bolt pattern, backspacing between 4.5" and 5" ---- and look at weight too. Lighter is usually better if the quality is there.
There aren't really any bad wheels these days; China has cleaned up its act...

When I ditched my 18" wheels, I went to 4WheelParts locally with a list of wheels I liked and a list of wheels I didn't hate; I went on a day that they had a sale (usually one a month with them). I gave the manager my list and asked them which one they could give me at a stupid discount.

If you put 285/75-16 tires on a 16x8 wheel with 4.75" backspacing, it will tuck in about perfectly; 5" might be even better but you might not be able to go wider later. 4.5" backspacing and you'll stick out of the fenders just a hair --- never got me in trouble.
When the suspension flexes all the way, the back tire will kiss the fender though. If you go easy, not a problem. If you run like a rumrunner, you'll pop the fender off eventually.
A flatfender kit from Bushwacker or a small lift will fix that up.

This is a Sahara with bumpers, winch, 2.5" lift, 16x8 Procomp wheels w/4.5" backspacing, 285/75-16 Cooper STTs.




This is what it looked like with just that size tires and wheels, no lift, no bumpers, etc.

I have run these tires on my 4X Tundra since 10/09, installed at 22100 miles, 2 years later, at 49,500 miles I still have about half tread depth left.

With proper rotations/balance/air pressure, they are wearing very well, no increased road noise over stock tires and perform very well in snow, and under moderate 4-wheel drive conditions. I have not taken them to extreme conditions since installation.. We plan to install Nitto's on our Jeep when the time comes...

Howdy. Semi-hi-jack! In your lower picture, how long did you run those before kitting out the rest of the vehicle? Just issues at full compression in the rear? Good with hard turns? Working up my "soon to be purchased" 2013 Sport Unlimited wish list. Plan on working my way from the ground up, literally, with 16s... Thanks!

FYI...this thread's over a year old, and Hilldweller sold that Jeep. He still makes an appearance on WF from time to time, but it might be awhile before you get a response from him.

I agree with you, though; it's a hot rig.
