So i'm looking at replacing my GY SR-A stock tires after 17,000 miles. I have some tires picked out and would like some feedback/experience/pictures to help in my decision making. Not a fan of Goodyear so dura's are out.
I have a Teraflex leveling kit, 3.21 gears, and will be using the stock rims (7.5). I would prefer not to use spacers, but will until I get new rims.

Here the tires I can't decide on:

Cooper St Maxx- 285 70R17 55lbs or 255 80R17 51lbs.

BFG KO2- 285 70R17. 57.4lbs

Toyo ATII- P285 70R17. 48lbs.

I prefer an AT tire so any info that can be gotten will be greatly appreciated. Thanks! :beerdrinking:

I have the identical setup on my 15 JKS but with 4K miles and an upgraded front bumper. Yesterday I ordered BFG AT KO2's in 275/70/17. Bought 5 from Amazon $1099 shipping plus MA tax. I have the same tire on my 05 Tacoma and prefer them over the Duratracs. I had the GY's for a couple of years but found them loud compared to the BFG.

I opted for the narrower tire primarily for winter/snow driving and also took into consideration the 3:21. I also leave it on the Cape for the summer so my wife and kids need to get in easily.

I just did this & also have 3.21 gear - I went with the Toyo's but in the LT OWL version (white letters turned in) it has a more aggressive side wall than the P version and the white letter version only weighs 2 pounds more. (the black wall LT is 56 pounds due to manufacturing process toyo told me??) I got new wheels at the same time, spacers are not for me. Have only had them less than a week, so don't know how they will be long term - so far I'm really happy, my Jeep looks like a real Jeep! I was also able to get them from a local Firestone for $1289 out the door.

Those look very good. Are those Mammoth rims? I'm really digging the look of those toyo's. Thanks

...

Cooper St Maxx- 285 70R17 55lbs or 255 80R17 51lbs.

...
I ran these on stock rims and they worked great. No rubbing, no added rolling resistance.
Fuel economy takes a hit from the weight & circumference but not too bad.
I have 285s now and fuel economy took another little hit...

I'll probably go back to 255s after I wear these out.

Agreed! Mine are 285x17x18. I think that the Xtremes tread is a step up from standard AT2s, in terms of being a little bit closer to an MT, but remaining an AT. They also have a great tread life warranty. They performed great in the rocks during the Fall, and we'll see how they do in the snow this weekend in the hills. The Xtremes are, however, limited to certain sizes.

The ATII's are great tires. The P rated version will ride better than the other LT's you have listed. They won't be quite as aggressive and the sidewalls will be a little softer...

I have the S/T Maxx and it is a great tire, but the LT's ride a little firmer with their E rating. If you look at some of the D rated tires, you will find a little better ride.

St Maxx is a great tire. Ran them on my F150 and put them through hell. If you do think about an MT in the future give the Cooper STT Pro a look, absolutely fantastic off road tire.

Thanks for all your input. I think I'm going to get the Cooper ST Maxx in 285 70 17. I going to use stock rims. Does anyone have this setup? Any rubbing? Or are spacers suggested? Thanks again.

It will rub the control arms; you can adjust the steering stops to help.
Also might tap your rear fenders when you're fully articulated.

I'd get new wheels and a leveling kit for 285s. The 255/80-17 doesn't rub at all with stock wheels though.

I've changed my mind about a thousand times. Discount tire direct has the ko2's for a great price. I believe I have to get spacers to run these. Would a 1.25" spacer work or should I get the 1.5" spacers. Thanks for your help

Search for spacer info on here and you'll get lots of hits.

I'm against spacers for a number of reasons. And I'll always advise new wheels instead.

I figure, why spend money on something that:
1) is illegal
2) is a potential failure point
3) is more maintenance
4) adds weight

You can get good wheels for under $100 each from 4WheelParts right now and be done with it. Not have to worry about extra torquing, additional complexity.

Or run the 255/80-17 tires on your stock wheels with no problems...

I went with the K02s in 275/70r15 and have had no issues on the stock wheels, I really like the tire a lot so far. I've yet to take them off-road, but I have no concerns there. I'm also looking forward to the snow. I will mention that I've seen a hit to my MPGs. I assume it's because these are about 8 lbs heavier than stock. Yours will be even heavier if you go 285.

You have stock 15s? How did that happen?

I just put on 285/70/17s KO2's on my '12 JKUS replacing the stick Duelers (and stock rims with 17x9 MB352's).

Definitely a different drive. Handling not as nimble as the narrower tires, and heavier sidewalls make for a stiffer ride. Bumps are definitely more jarring than stock.

But still breaking them in and getting use to em. Love the look though :-D

Any speed difference is negligible, and so far, haven't noticed any big hit to gas mileage... but I've only had them a few days.

Had 2 sets of AT KO's on my TJ... first set lasted near 80k miles!

I run both toyo at 2 and Bfg ko2. I have both sets mounted and switch back and forth. Both are great if I could have only one set it would be the the toys. If you go with the ko2 hit tom s up the 4wd.com vendor he beat everyone on price. You can run many 35's on stock carrier without blocking brake light.

I ordered my ko2's from discount tire direct for a good price. Then I saw the 4WD.com ad and cried a little bit. Great prices! Thanks for the 3rd brake light info. Tires should be here today. Let the fun begin!

If I get white letters i am mounting them out.

Because, to me, having the letters on the inside of the tire is like wearing a white dress shirt that shows your nipples. You're trying to hide them, but we all see them.
