Great info rics1997 - excellent pics really give me allot of the info I was looking for.

If I go to 285/70, I have the option to go with DT, but I do like the MT/R look.

How is the road noise on the MT/Rs? (note - I'm running the stock SRA right now, so any noise will probably be an increase)

Noise is important to me as this will be a daily driver - so I'd still like to be able to carry on a phone conversation via uconnect at highway speed without a hum in the call.

ChiefDan (or anyone), have you thought about the 275/70R17 BFG AT KO?

It specs out at 1-inch wider and just a tick over the stock size (32.1" vs. 32.1"). I'm not sure about rubbing clearance, but since many have run the 285s with minor rubbing, it's possible we could run this tire on stock wheels without issue.

They are an E-rated tire... not entirely sure what all that means, except that I guess they can handle higher loads, so that may mean they will ride harsh (?).

Has anyone run these on stock wheels? I didn't see them come up in my searches.

Since you love the KOs, this might be right up your alley. I like the looks of them, and they are certainly popular on all types of 4WD vehicles, so it would seem they would fit the bill nicely.

Yes - and before joining this forum that was my first thought. The data provided in this forum provided data to consider other options, including an increase in size with spacers.

I've decided to stay with the stock wheels, because the only other wheel I like is the AEV pintler, and adding five of those to the price of 17" tires is a little out of scope right now. (for that money, I could have the LOD rear bumper I want...)

I'm setting up a bolt change and level kit, waffling on the warn elite front bumper and a winch.

For tires, it will probably be the 275/70/17 BFG AT KO or the 255/75/17 GY MT/R. any 285 adds another $50/wheel in spacers.

I want to have my tires in place so everything in together for an alignment when the level kit and bolt job is done.

But then, Jervboy shows nice pics of 285/70 on stock wheels which look like they fit under the flares well in this thread:

The profile reads spacers, but I thin maybe the pic was after the tires, but before the spacers. He also has the leveling kit, and the proper color...so naturally I use his ride as an example.

As of now, they do rub - but only at the extreme right or left.

I would say if you are careful - spacers may not be required for daily driving.

Right now I'm getting the TeraFlex leveling kit installed - we will see if this holds true after the kit.

Rubbing is one of the negatives for me. The other is the weight and cost of these tires relative to moving to 265s instead, which is where it looks like I'm headed. I don't want/need bigger tires, nor do I want the hassle (to me anyway) of dealing with a lift and/or spacers; I simply want a better tire. The 265/70R17 DuraTrac seems to fit ().

So, while the 265s are not the normal route when one upgrades tires for a Jeep, I think it's my best all around solution for what we need. Sure, I lose the beefier look the 285s give you (which is nice), but I don't take quite the performance hit as the 285s spec at 9 lbs. more per than the 265s, which are already 7 lbs. more than the stock SRAs. Plus, I save a little money as well.

At the end of the day, I've found that the 265/70R17 DuraTrac will be about 0.0352 inches (slightly more than 1/32 of an inch) smaller; In my mind, the same size.

There are other brands that have P rated 285/70/17s, they are lighter than the LT tires in the same size.

True, but my main reason for any change would be to upgrade to the almost universally loved Goodyear DuraTrac.

Plus the fact still remains that I'll have rubbing issues with the 285s. My decision is based on more than the weight and for me there are simply too many trade-offs to move to the 285s.

In fact, if there were a better selection of tires in the 255/75, I might not even switch at all. But the only tire I like is the Firestone Destination A/T. I like the DuraTrac better.

Just to confirm, you only had rubbing on the air dam?

Did you do the leveling kit to fix the factory rake, or was that to prevent other rubbing?

18x 9 wheel, 285/65/18 on a 2012 JKU./ I've been told yes they will fit fine, others say some rubbing. 99% driving in the city.

The rub will be very noticable.. They will clear your fenders fine, it's when you turn your wheels far enough left or right you will rub. I don't think washers will help you out with that much width. You will need either wheel spacers or new wheels. There is a thread in the tires and wheels section that talks about what works on a stock JK(U). It will let you know what the largest tire size you can run on stock wheels.

Edit: Just realized your talking about a after market 18x9 and not the stock 18x7.5. My bad.. With proper back spacing what ever 18x9 your looking at will be fine

Some sites will say it with the wheel info.. Others don't and you have to call.. Of course if discount tire offers the tire you want you can also pm the discount tire rep here (DiscountTire) and he will tell you if the size tire you want will work with the wheel and give you the wheels bs

You should be OK.. But I think it would be close.. The stock wheels are 7.5in wide with 6.25 or 6.5 inches of back space. Bump for another opinion on this
