I would stay away from the earlier automatics as they were catching fire.
U should be able to get a great deal on a used one. U don't gain a ton of horses with the jk due to the 3.8L v6.

Rubicons are out there too tons of great parts on them.

watch out for the freedom top, i have heard horror stories about leaks. also the windshield pillars have been known to rattle. other than those it doesn't seem too bad.

After researching, I have found out that some had trouble with tranny's overheating & trans' fluid run out onto the exhaust, thus catching on fire. Hell -they must have been climbing something HUGE to get that hot, lol Huh, think I will fit an extra transmission cooler

As far as comparison, the engines in both are good. However the 4.0 makes 190hp and 230ft/lb tq at 3000 rpm. The 3.8 produces 215hp at 5000rpm and 245ft/lb tq. so under normal driving conditions the 4.0 actually makes more power, unless you think your Jeep is a racecar. But as far as offroad capibility they both are really similar.

If you buy a used JK the lifetime drivetrain warranty doesn't transfer, if this is a concern to you consider a new one.

Richard
