To buy or not to buy

So, I am about 9 payments from the end of my lease and am looking at a sport unlimited with 24s and 373 with hard top. I would have to come out of pocket significantly to the tune of 2200$ in order to payoff current lease. This puts me in back into wait mode until march- may of 2014 so here is my question:

For jeeps is it better to buy the last production year (resale and value wise) or wait for a first run new model 2016? I know reliability-wise, the last model year will have the fewest bugs but what will the effect of value be on a 1-2 year old vehicle when the new model arrives?

Thoughts please, first time jeeper, long time fan

I would pass on a Jeep that comes on 24's....especially if it is going to cost you that much money.

That's a tough question to answer without knowing exactly what is going to change on the 2016.

I would actually go with April/May 2014. This is the time when the model year generally change and you may be able to find a better deal on a 2014 at that point.

Case in point, I bought my 09 Unlimited Rubicon in May of 09 and got it at $28K against a sticker of $34K.

Also, if you decide to wait for the 2016 what are you going to do for a vehicle between lease payoff and purchse of a 2016?

After having an 07 JKU and a very early model build at that I will now wait a year or two for Chrysler/Fiat to work out the bugs on the new model.

Not only is it near impossible to find aftermarket parts since the manufacturers aren't ramped up on the new model but I had multiple sensor issues that required frequent trips back to the dealer to fix. (Including some computer compiling error that shut the Jeep off while cruising at 65 miles an hour down the highway)

My plan is to pick up a 2014 and drive it until 2017-18 models are available unless the zombie apocalypse wipes us out.

24s is the package not 24" wheels lol. Not sure what I'd buy in the mean time between waiting maybe just a beater. I'm coming from a 2011 Malibu that I saw take a tremendous hit when the new model arrived. I also plan on keeping it 3-4 years depending on how well it's treating me. 3-4 years would be 2-3 into a new body style (presumably). I am looking for copperhead which isn't available yet.

I like the info guys keep the opinions coming please

Older jeeps are always cooler for some reason, your gonna have a few years of owning "NOT A REAL JEEP" and finally the Jks are gonna be Real Jeeps!

why buy a new one if yours is going to be paid off?

Buying a new one would be because values seem to peak for use vs loss at about 4 years. In other words, pay 30k$ drive 4 years add 60k miles still worth 25k$. Combine this with the loss in value after a new body has been out for more than 3 years and (I think) the losses are greater with holding any longer. I could be off base and if so I welcome other findings since I in fact haven't owned a jeep jeep only 2 gc.

I bet you could get a sweet deal on a 2013 sitting in a dealers lot. If they want the sale they'll take care of the balance on your lease. Find one you like work out a deal and then see if they will give you the same deal on a new 2014.

Ah....a Sport S..... Big difference....

Honestly, order a 2014 (or find a good deal on a 2013) and simply enjoy it.

Buying a vehicle off lease is typically not a wise move financially. As far as the $2200 it will cost to get out of your lease thats a simple math problem...is your payment more than $244 per month?($244x9 months=$2200) If it is then you should definitely move forward. If it isn't you need to see how much the difference is compared to your current payment and decide whether its worth the money lost to get out of the leased vehicle and into the new Jeep. But as others have said this is a good time to get a 2013 at a very attractive price so your smiles per mile will go way up compared to the drab Malibu!!!!

Thanks to everyone. To clarify I'm not looking to buy my Malibu, I was trying to get out of it to get into a wrangler but ally wants full payment (2200). Looks like I'm driving a Malibu for a bit longer. Ugh

You should talk to your dealer. I've leased vehicles before and my dealer has called me when there is 6 months to go and asked me to trade up to a new vehicle and they will pay the remaining 6 lease payments. Now all they do is roll them into the cost of the new vehicle but they should be more than willing to pay out Ally for you if you buy a new Jeep.

Now when I go for a new vehicle they act surprised when I tell them there is nothing owing on the vehicles. It seems most trade-in these days have something owing as they now finance over 72-96 months to get these low monthly payments.

The only reason to not go see your dealer is if you are worried they will talk you into a deal that you can't walk away from.

They are more than willing to roll the remaining pmts on my Malibu into a jeep loan, it's me while not willing. Why wouldn't I just keep the car for the remaining 9 months if I'm going to pay for it? Same true if I bought a jeep now, it would cost the same to just make my payments but then at least I'd have the benefit of putting the mileage on the car...
You guys think you have a long 6-8 week wait for your build.... I got 9 months... Well maybe 5 - if I build then its just 3 more payments by the time it arrives. Not having to get out of a lease puts me in a better negotiating position as well

So maybe this is an obvious question but if yo uare leasing a malibu (which seems odd to me in the first place) how are you going to be able to afford to buy a Jeep? Unless you are saving a bunch of money while paying for the malibu and using that as a downpayment i don't think your payments will be anywhere near each other. If yo uare saving money then it is totally up to you if you want to just pay off the 2200 and get a jeep or if it was me, i would probably do both. order the jeep and keep paying on the malibu and sicne it will take 3 months to build you shouldn't have a payment for that time so order teh jeep with about 4 months to go on the lease and you should be ok.

I personally didn't put a dime down on my 2012 i just boguht because interest rates are so low and i am technically gettign free money because the money i would have used is earning me more interest.

I don't see how my finances became part of your concern, but i'll be fine. As for my Malibu - I needed something a lot better in mpg at the time than my gas chugging 08 Sierra. I now have a normal freeway commute again and I hate the car having come from an ext cab Sierra and two SUVs prior. Actually, I hated this car driving off the lot but gas was hitting 5$ gallon so I had to pucker up at 20000 miles yr.
