Too loud?

I must have made myself numb to the noise between driving my 2014 JKUR (hard top on now) and my KTM, but wow... I drove my wife's Volvo S40 the other day and it felt absolutely silent. Then, when I got back in my Jeep, it felt SO LOUD!

What have y'all done to make the noise more tolerable? I remember people used to put DynaMat in their cars in the early 90s when I was in High School, but I think that was more for the rattles from the ridiculous stereos we all had...

Do the Hot Head headliners help? I'm hesitant to get one of those because I switch between the hard and soft tops with the seasons.

Thanks in advance!

I have the Mopar Headliners and they do muffle sound inside.

At freeway speeds, all I hear is the wind noise...which will always be there given the aerodynamics of Wrangler.

It's a Jeep, not a Volvo. You have the best Jeep ever made and the quietest ever made. You should ride in an old military Jeep if you think yours is loud.Your Jeep can do things the Volvo never thought about, you should try it sometime. There is a Dynamat type stuff already in your Jeep but, you can add more. Hot Heads will help a little. I have an old Jeep that is so loud, makes my Wrangler sound like your Volvo ! I guess it's all relative.

You're comparing a luxury brand to a off road focused Wrangler. Haha

The headliners may help some but honestly if the Volvo is your baseline, you won't be satisfied with that. This is my first Jeep but I grew up with friends who had CJs, YJs and TJs and the first time I rode in a JK my first thought was being amazed at how "quiet" it was. Good luck, but I think you'll need to just get used to it. Haha

I have had a 93, 98 and now a 2012 JKU. The 12 is by far the most quiet in any driving condition.

You really can't compare a car of any sort versus a box on wheels when it comes to wind noise. Although, I see your point.

I know it's not a Volvo, but thanks for stating the obvious... ;-)

I have had an '84 CJ-7, a '92 YJ, an '09 JKUR, a '12 JKUS, and this '14 JKUR (just in the way of Jeeps). I know Jeeps will always be louder than cars--I was just hoping for some real world experiences/solutions from fellow Jeepers.

Cheers!

Ok, So I am on my 3rd JKU and was going to post this as another thread and still may depending on the feedback.

My 2016 JKUR seems louder inside then the previous (13, 15) - I can pin point a higher pitched whistling sound to the junction at the front of the freedom panels where the tops tie in at the footman loop .

Does anyone notice more sound from this area ?

I have reseated the tops but will reseat according to the mopar directions this afternoon - if this doesn't work will revisit the dealership and drive another jeep to see if its me or the jeep -

Any others have this or had a fix ?

Whenever I had whistling, here is what I did:
- Take off the freedom panels
- Loosen all of the bolts holding the back part on
- Wiggle the back part a bit
- Tighten the bolts
- Put the freedom panels back on

All the while, make sure none of the thin rubber membrane is folded, tucked in wrong, etc.

I am happy with the Infinity in the 09. Just the tweeter mod and replaced the sound bar speakers with Infinity 5032's that I had laying around. Previously had a TJ with the 7 speaker "premium" sound system. After replacing the HU, adding the power pack amp, replacing all the speaker and adding a mono sub amp, still wasn't happy. Infinity in the JK isn't that bad.

Try driving the Volvo over the Rubicon if you want to hear loud noises. Flash
Helpful...

I called a place in MD called Sound Deadener Showdown--they wanted $568 for materials and $1275 for installation. That seems ridiculous...

Does anybody have BedRug or BedTred? They have a 1/4" thick polypropylene foam to insulate from heat and noise.

Alternate.

What have y'all done to make the noise more tolerable?
After driving my YJ during the week, the JK is eerily quiet to me.
So, you need to buy a YJ now!

should of bought a Volvo instead...just saying

I think it was mainly the stupid BFG Mud Terrain KM tires...

I have a set of Sport S wheels & tires (Moabs and Goodyear Wranglers) that I swap on sometimes to change things up. I put them on yesterday and the difference was substantial.

I am still planning to install the Boom Mat if it is ever NOT raining...

I'm sure jeep chose white because that was the unpainted color of the fiberglass-like material. Was cheaper to just paint the outside than both the out and in. And much cheaper than dyeing the material before pouring it into the mold (which is what they should have done since scratches and gouges would reveal the same color underneath).

Glad to hear the Boom Mat helped. My 09 with hard top is the quietest vehicle I've ever owned. Surprised me. I actually have the opposite problem. I think it's TOO quiet. lol. But I like loud vehicles. I have a loud 66 Mustang and an even louder Kawasaki Vulcan with cobra exhaust that drowns out Harleys. So I guess there are a lot of vehicles that would seem quiet to me.

There's really no solution here because nothing you do to the interior will help once you put the soft top down.

Get some headliners for the HT. They do make a big difference in sound and I complain about the noise level as much as you. I just can't see myself driving all the other lame cars that are quieter. Edit: I hate when I don't read to see how old the threads are.
I agree with you 100%!

I wish they would actually manufacture the Africa concept--it's exactly what I want.
