I've got a 2015 rubicon, bought it without a tow package, had dealer install it a couple of weeks ago. Got jeep back, all was good, went and picked up a wells cargo trailer i purchased and then noticed i had blown the drivers side front and back running or parking lights as some call it. Took jeep to dealer, the tech looked it over found nothing wrong, replaced fuse (M17). I took a battery and checked each of the 3 leads on the trailer wiring harness, with all working when power applied. I then just today tried the harness again, plugging into the jeep, and bam instantly the same result, blown M17 again. I didn't have trailer hooked at time of this 2nd test, trailer was hooked when this first happened. It was recommended by trailer dealer to replace the 15A fuse with a 20A. I'm very nervous to try that, anyone else ever replace that fuse with the higher 20A? I can only believe that there is a short somewhere on trailer. Unfortunately the dealer i purchased from is 2 states away. Not sure how they will handle the trouble shooting part of this, anyway any suggestions would be greatly appreciated, thanks, chad
I have a tester for my seven pin plug, which I purchased on Amazon, that has led lights to show if the harness at the TV is working correctly. Maybe they have one for your four pin harness.
I always recommend having the dealer install the 4 or 7 pin harness because then it's on them if something goes wrong. But when the dealer is two states away, that sucks. Mine is factory, so there shouldn't be any surprises when I hook up that utility trailer next month.
guess i explained confusingly. Trailer dealer is 2 states away, jeep dealer is just 5 miles from me. Jeep dealer installed tow package and has rechecked it saying all is good on that end, unfortunately the trailer dealer that i purchased the trailer from is about 400 miles away, making it hard to have them look at the trailer, sorry for confusion in my original post.
hi bill, the harness is a 4 pin. I did verify that they have the same pin connection and color coding. I'm sure now i have a short in trailer wire somewhere, going to have to trouble shoot it.
Yeah man. I have seen more issues on the trailer side, than the vehicle side. Assuming vehicle has the factory wiring. That said, I just went out and checked my Jeep (4 pin).
For reference.
Going from Male pin (in order) to female.. is ground. Next was running lights. Left turn, then right turn.
If you can't figure it out, and Since trailer dealer is so far away, maybe call them and ask if they have a shop in your area that can perform warranty work? If not, ask if they will cover the costs if you need to pay a shop to fix.
hi fungun, yeah, thats what i was thinking. Its a wells cargo, and there is a dealer in my area, so i'm hoping that will be the way to go. I feel bad, i actually priced this exact trailer from the local dealer, and the lowest they could get it to me was 1300 more than i paid for it from this dealer. I had to drive 735 miles round trip on day, took right at 14 hours from my driveway to my driveway with trailer. Good way to break in the new jeep and mess with the radio and nav functions. Anyway, thats why the distance from the dealer to me. I have already contacted the purchase dealer and hope to hear back today, thanks for everyones input.
Quick update, traced trailer wiring till found push connector for rear running lights that wasn't seated all the way with an exposed terminal that i believe was touching an exterior screw that mounts that light fixture to trailer. Seated it, plugged trailer into jeep again, and all is working now. Can't believe i actually found and fixed it.
