Tow Hitch (Recovery)

I'm probably going to be buying a tow hitch. I'm looking at the classIII from Rugged Ridge. Has anyone used this as a recovery unit. If I get stuck and get pulled out by my hitch(Which is why I'm buying it, for a recovery point) is it going to fail on me and pull off. It looks like it's not made for that kind of thing compaired to the hitched for a Tj or a truck of the same class rating.

I have one with a 13k pound D ring - I don't know the brand but I will look at it when I get home. Same idea - it's in there with a locking pin, and I have (2) D rings rated at 9k outboard on the rear bumper (not shown in the picture)

I've pulled a couple of different sized trucks out of tight spots by the receiver before I got my bumper with d-rings; worked fine.

Either a jook or just putting the pin through the loop in the strap

I have a stock hitch and use a very heavy duty ring with clevis pin through the tongue of the hitch. Had to use it to be pulled out of a major wash out after the tow truck operator laughed at me. My transfer case linkage 60 cent part failed and the linkage fell apart. A fellow four wheeler pulled me out and the hitch was solid.

I'll look at the reciever - it was installed by the dealer, along with the piece that holds the D ring where a trailer ball woudl normally be

I have that RR receiver and I've pulled trucks using it alone (threading a snapstrap through the hole) and with a receiver shackle.
Let me dig out an old picture and see if you can see the thing in there.

Here it is in my front receiver:

I also pulled vehicles just using the tow ball. Ya do what ya gotta do...

What size tires are they in that pic, and I'm assuming you don't have a lift there at that time.

285/75-16 on stock springs; just got back from Discount Tire with it. I don't think it can ever get that clean again.

What size rim were you running. I'm in the market for new rubber, so i'm trying to get the best bang for the buck. I want to get the biggest tire i can under there.

Take a look around the "freebie" sections in the various forums. I bet you can find someone giving away one of the stock rear hooks from a '09 or later that connects to the rear frame on the driver's side.

16x8 procomp alloy ---- they were on sale for $85 each. Not my first pick, but my wallet said yes.

I have both front and rear hitch's, although HD's set up will probably handle more of a recovery load than my OLYMPIC front bumper--His is a frame mount hitch

I don't use the D-rings for pulling anything/body/trailer, I have two different size "LUNNETTE's (military) that I can also use as a trailer hitch

I have 4 D-rings in my recovery/HiLift collection-for different uses

Here's the front hitch/bumper, which is also good for jockying the trailer around--should the need arise !!
